SAK wishful thinking...

I'm somewhat new to SAKs and have a new appreciation and love for them - as many of you have for years. Now that I have used several different models I found myself wishing for one with two large blades (or one large and one small), a pruning blade, awl and scissors. The carver is the closest I've found and a great tool, but I don't really need the saw as much as I'd enjoy and use the scissors. Now if only I could convince someone who could do something about it...oh well, a person can dream.

What's your ideal SAK?

My ideal SAK is only one layer thick while in the pocket, but magically has whatever tool I need when I take it out of the pocket :)

But in reality I find that some combination of small sak on keychain for scissors, t&t, nailfile, backup blade etc and a 2 layer model in the pocket covers the majority of my needs. I keep a pliers based multitool and real tool kit in each vehicle and have more than enough saws, files, screwdrivers, etc while at the house to want to pocket carry the larger SAKs anymore. At one time, I pocket carried a Handyman, so I've been at both ends of the spectrum.

+1. Syph will make your dreams come true. His work is straight quality. Here's mine:

I carry a small Tinker as my EDC at home. When out I carry a Deluxe Tinker in a belt pouch. Both are great, the small
Tinker has virtually no weight and does tons of chores.

There is no such thing as an ideal SAK, for me. You need two knives.
Lately I always carry a small Wenger in combination with a larger knife. The small Wenger has scissors, nail file, small knife and toothpick+tweezers. The Victorinox Classic would also qualify.
The larger knife varies; it can be a Victorinox Huntsman, or Spartan, or Pioneer Alox Electrician and occasionally something else (my mind is set on a Kershaw Chill or maybe a Spyderco Byrd Meadowlark: somthing not too large and not too expensive with a clip and a good edge).
The Spartan would be my favourite if it had a clip. I screwed a clip on it that I took from another knife, but the cellidor scales do not hold it very well.
And so we keep searching till we get it right :)

Thanks for the recommendation for mod work guys. I did get the opportunity to build this one. Carver plus scissors in blue hard anodize.

Believe it or not, I've never handled an Alox model Vic until recently. I didn't know they were that different from the cellidor ones. I think it was a Cadet. No internal dividers, and a much sharper (superior?) awl/reamer.

My question is, can the Alox models be equipped with the bottom tools common in that position, like the corkscrew, awl, phillips, pack-hook, etc?

Short answer is no. They use a different 3 pin pivot system and the plastic ones use a 4 pin.

But... custom springs could be made to use backtools on alox, and hide the 4th pin. The reason I havent done this is for me there are no good backtools on the plastic ones anyhow aside from the awl. And on alox the awl is inline. I dont care for T handled tools in general, so I just havent had the desire to build one. I know some folks love the corkscrew, but Ive never had a need.

Wow, that modified Carver is freaking brilliant. Nice work Rob. I may have to ask you for a new config pretty soon.

As for the back tools, I also didn't find much usefulness to them.. I preferred the awl on the 93mm alox models, and the top tool version of the Philips driver.

What would be awesome though are the scale tools, the toothpick and tweezers. :D

Yes it is brilliant. Can't wait for that little beauty to arrive. Thanks again for the SAK mod recommendation guys and the great work from Syph007. Hopefully I'll be asking for another configuration in the future.
