SAKs and piggybacking

I'm currently going through some thoughts on retooling my EDC and field carry. Now, I make knives, love fixed blades, love my necker- but I *always* have an SAK with me.

For the past 4 years that SAK has been an outrider. In the beginning, I got it because of the fixed blade, longer saw, and full complement of what I consider to be other necessaries (can, bottle, cork openers- scissors- phillips head)

I find that of late, I don't use the saw often. I no longer do random sidework with plants and pruning, and around the yard I use my corona. I also have a folding corona saw for hiking.

So I'm thinking of downsizing my EDC SAK to a 91mm knife. I've got a couple on order from scibeer- the original yeoman pattern. That'll be my full time pocket knife

But I'm also looking at the climber model for field use (I prefer the seperate can and bottle openers to having a phillips for woodsbumming)- The climber model is as good as it gets in that size. The compact is about 25% lighter, and would work for lighter kit. (The climber doesn't have the pen, pin, or mini screwdriver but that's all easy to fix with add ons and a new set of scales)

Now here's the tricksy bit- I'm thinking this would make an ideal small piggyback rig. take one of the "normal" 4.5 to 5.5 inch leuku pattern bushcrafters or EDC spearpoint knives in an expedition sheath and put a small molded pouch on for the SAK. This can go either way, the compact is a bit thinner and lighter, and would work well with smaller bushcrafters, the climber has IMO the sturdier can and bottle opener combination, but adds an extra layer. (the original yeoman is ideal, too, but only available as a custom build, which I'd probably be happy make part of the set once I have a dozen on hand)

Why not an alox? well, for starters, I actually use the tweezers. And the pen. And the straight pin. I also don't think, if ti's a piggyback rig with a fixed blade knife, that you need the slight extra beefiness of a farmer.

I don't know when I'm going to get around to this exactly. All the parts are there, and I'm going to go ahead and get a few more climbers. I have a little bit more catching up to do on orders since I've got four finicky ones (dual handle material through tang, wharncliffe, bone seax, and larger hunter/utiliy) to get out of the shop ASAP. (two more that are DONE but waiting on final sheath stuff. Can't move faster than the materials)

I've always liked folding knives in a sheath and piggy backed model would serve well. I would make sure that model you choose has a lanyard ring so that you can make a FOB for it to help pull it out of its sheath.

I understand your thinking on the Alox, but damn they look really good and a silver one sticking 1/4 length out of one of Koyote Girl's black sheaths would just look fantastic. Personally, I use tweezers so often that the SAK one's don't really cut it. I get the jewelers precision tweezers and they get used for everything from sorting small insects in field work to pulling out sea urchin spines from my skin, or maybe just digging out these guys:

As a piggy back rig I'd say list of priority tools: awl, small blade, bottle opener, can opener, saw. I never really loved the cork screw, but they are mighty handy to have when you need it.

I think a SAK piggybacked to a larger blade makes an excellent combination. I have one that JeffH made for me that I carry often. I would like to have another made in leather instead of kydex. Maybe a small pouch where different blades could be carried at different times?

For the most part, any 3 layer knife will fit in the same sheath as any other 3 layer knife. I'm comfortable with a 3-4 layer sheath, but beyond that I think they are too loose. The sheaths are waterformed.

KGD- you are right about the alox looks. And I can't argue that it wouldn't work, I just like the 'tool density' of the climber (with pen and pin mod) and yeoman, or compact. And the scissors are actually *important* to me.

I think the corkscrew is one of those things that can be hard to figure. It was once more useful outside of just wine bottles than it is now. We still have various things with corks, partly because we home preserve/brew. Given the non alox 2 and 3 layer options, I see no reason not to have the corkscrew (which also is the mini screwdriver holder and that's where the straight pin goes. even if it becomes just a knot pulling fid for someone.

I also live in northern California and Really Tasty $3 wine is normal here.

Need to get some photos up. I've got one molded to a climber that I've been carrying for a couple weeks. It has one of the..."good kind" of belt clips on the back that will work for piggybacking and won't fall off - in fact it might take 5-10 minutes to get it off deliberately!

I'll get pics today.

I also ordered a farmer, so I have the compact (so perfect), climber (3 layer), a 4 layer (too thick, IMO), and the farmer to waterform to. The climber is a standard 3 layer Vic, and realistically once you mod it with the pen and add the stickpin and jeweler's screwdriver, it's REALLY full purpose- the scibeer yoeman is the only one I like better in a 3 layer. I have right now 2 more climbers and two more sets of sapphire scales with pen.

The Climber+ has the stick pin and mini screwdriver in the corkscrew.

My favorite is the Electrician+ with the saw. It would be my perfect SAK if it had the tweezers, toothpick, scissors, and a lanyard ring.

I need to contact Scibeer or SwissBianco or someone who mods these things.

Christof, I may be interested in a SAK sheath or two.

Scibeer is doing some offline work and is still a few weeks out from doing orders (I have 2 yoeman knvies on order)

Sorry about the photos not being up yet, they are on the camera, will work on it

prototype, obviously stitched by me :D

The secure belt clip style seems to be the way to go - it's removable with some effort, and can be worn on a belt. Being a prototype, it's attached with thread and a copper rivet instead of a proper sleeve

and ready to go! Fits either a three layer standard 90mm or a 3 layer ALOX model right now. As soon as I get a 4 layer for Sierra to waterform We'll add that in.

And it will work on pretty much any of the expedition sheaths, or a belt :)

Probably $30, including shipping but not including a knife ;)

As I said, we dont' have a 4 layer alox model yet, but we've got 2,3,4,5 layer 90mm and the farmer. I'mn ordering another alox right now so at that point we should be good to go with just abotu any request. (Though I still can't see why the climber isn't the preference for people who carry a fixed blade knife to begin with)

Are there options like tooling/no tooling, contrasting stitching, brown/black leather, etc?
