I've seen pictures of metal handled Vic SAK's with hollow rivets, but haven't had any luck locating one. Are they still made, or are they a discontinued item?

Vic no longer makes Soldiers with Hollow Rivets/Bails. They were basically used for the key bail. Wenger still uses the bail on their new Soldiers, thus they have the hollow rivet.

The only SAK with a hollow rivet would be the wenger SI (like the vic soldier). I suggest you pick one up if you see it. All the Vic soldiers that had the hollow rivet have been discontinued for a while.

I've seen several Wenger SI at places like Dick's Sporting Goods, Sportmart, and Gander Mountain.

I've got an '86 with a hollow rivet in it, and a while back, I remember seeing a discussion that might have concluded that for Vic Soldiers, the hollow rivets were DC'd a couple of years after.

Pardon my deviation, but since we are talking about discontinued features of Victorinox SAKs, does anybody know why they quit making RED Alox handles? I just always liked that version. I'm glad I have a couple of older ones.

The Soldier was produced in Red Alox in 1961 and was switched to Silver Alox in 1965. (Swiss Army Knives - Derek Jackson). Other models were produced in Red Alox into the '80s. in Europe. They were never a regular U.S. production model. Special run of Red Alox Farmers was produced for QVC sales last year and currently Victorinox has a special run of Red Alox Pioneers.
