Sal, a response is invited

I'm not sure why Sal or Spyderco needs to respond to this again. It has been addressed exhaustively both here and on the Spyderco forum.

Doing a search in Spyderco forum using "Walmart" for parameter doesn't seem to bring any specific response to the CHOICE. Lots of comments from users "happy" to find the "bargain" but nothing specifically addressing the marketing.

Unless, of course it's in the 144 responses to the announcement of the availability at Walmart.

Any specific thread you can remember?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I agree with most forum members here about not doing bussiness with Wal-mart. First of all, Wal-mart competes UNFAIRLY...........they lower their prices so they could "kill" off the competitions and then they raise their prices when noone is around to compete with them.

The reason that they can lower their prices and compete is mostly by paying their employees low wages...........and among other illegal matters. Just do a search on google and you will find that Wal-mart is not very well liked by the American public.

Well, Wal-mart does not have to practice what they are doing now to be profitable. Case and point, Costco employees are higher paid and are happier than whose at Wal-mart. And Costco still pulls in great profit margin.

I can go on and on about the evil Wal-mart, about how they get stuffs that are cheaply made in China that would break down frequently............who know, I heard that some of the stuffs made in China were made by prisoners in labor camp. As for me, I would not touch made in China stuffs and I would not go near a Wal-mart store.........

Hi Sal,

Thank for the reply, I cant link to the link you directed, it says the page can not be found........anyway, nice to meet you. As I said, I stand firmly on my purchase choice. If Wal-mart change their ways of doing biz, I would reconsider.

In my opinion, if one need a good knife, get a Mora .........they are relatively inexpensive and they cut and sharpened very well. But nowaday, I understand marketing is more important than substance.

Regards,

Juice

Hi Juice, sorry 'bout the link. It's on Bladeforums general forum started by Lavan; Spyderco/Wal-Mart...

It's your attituded that will change theirs. ELUs control the market. I guess we'll "hide-n'-watch" to see if Wal-Mart hears?

On the Mora, there are many "good" knives that have been around for a long time that function well. The market (not the marketing) seems to gravitate towards the more recent and more refined in any art or industry. I would guess that if a new Mora came out with an exotic steel and a high tech handle materialo, but still retained the simplicity, there would be attention drawn. There are a few very old sailboat designs that are still classics (the sea changes less than the market) that still sell well, but they are generally made from the best modern materials, which hold up well to contant sea environment.

Hi Sal,

Been thinking about what you said. I know that there is great deal of people who tend to gravitate toward the Scandinavian design. The problem is, while there are few knifemakers that make knife in that pattern (Frosts of Sweden, Helle, Roselli...etc), none of them make folders in that pattern.

The ease of sharpening would be a dream...........and as you have said, if one can come up with the modern folder design with better edge holding steel....I would be the first to buy it.

I hate to ruin the factory edge on my SERE 2000, so call me a wuss..........I am using my Wenger Highlander (I flattened the edge down like a Scandi grind) as daily cutter.............and my SERE in the other pocket for "look"....LOL

Lavan,
I'll give you some un-invited comments from a non-Sal:
Marketing a knife at WalMart that isn't selling well via the normal channels doesn't hurt dealers.
WalMart requesting a quality American-made knife keeps one more product (and job) here in this country. I don't mind encouraging that.
Spyderco has not sold out to the devil. Spyderco is a business, in business to do business. Doing that business with WalMart does not display a lack of integrity.
And finally, I'd like to see every single body who says "I'll never buy another Spyderco product again as long as they sell through WalMart" carry that idea through to its logical (if the word applies) conclusion.
NO MORE PRODUCTS FROM ANY OTHER COMPANY THAT SELLS THROUGH WALMART, EITHER!
Stop & think about that.
No more Hoover vacuums, no more Winchester/Marlin/Mossberg guns, no more GE appliances, no more coffeemakers by half a dozen makers, no more TVs made by a dozen companies, no more oil for your car from at least three brand names, no more Wranglers pants, and no more food from at least a couple hundred different companies.
Boycott one knifemaker for selling via WalMart, boycott every other company in the nation who retails through WalMart.
Or, don't buy a Native there & buy it elsewhere.
Or, be a hypocrite & boycott Spyderco & keep on buying from other companies who sell to WalMart.
If you want to avoid WalMart entirely based on principle, that's perfectly fine. But, expressing great indignation & boycotting Spyderco because they're doing business with a company you don't like (however valid the reasons), is more than a bit silly.
