Have you ever thought of changing your grip pattern so the "grippy" part goes all the way to the blade slot?

I like my Delica without the clip to make it slimmer. But it gives very little purchase to the tips of the fingers when opening the blade with the thumb.

If those pockety things ran all the way to the slot, there would be something to stick to dry fingers. Or.....better yet.....a diamond "checkering" pattern to replace the existing smooth border.

Shielded from rubbing on the pocket by the blade back protecting it, I think it would even last nearly forever.

 :)

(on a Blade Discussion thread I mentioned that I have run a bead of silicone along that area to give it some "grip.")

I got a gerber that has a "sticky" handle that goes down to the finger tips/ blade slots gives good grip

I use a weird technique to open my Spydies that solves the problem Lavan raises. While my first 3 fingers cradle the knife and my thumb sits over the hole, I place my pinky on the side of the handle closest to my palm (it's on the opposite side of the handle from the other fingers' tips) and apply a little pressure to the handle, away from my palm. This results in a solid grip on the knife while I swing the blade open. This definitely isn't the fastest way to open a Spyderco, but it isn't slow either. It feels very natural to me, so I use it a lot. I have some loss of feeling in my little finger, but it doesn't hinder this technique at all.

Jack142, the Gerber you mention probably has a santoprene handle with a firm polypropylene core. After you hold it for a few minutes, it actually sticks to your hand. It very well might help with gripping a clipless Delica. The downside is that it would make removal from a pocket a little more difficult due to the "sticky-ness". I've wished for other knives to use santoprene on their grips ever since I bought that Gator, but I don't know of anyone else who's used it. There could be a reason for that.

I can see how extending the "volcanoes" to the edge could help on opening, but it would probably hinder one-handed grip changes. That could decrease the defensive usefulness of the Delica.

Speaking of the Delica, my lefty carbon fiber serrated version should be waiting for me at home. I just got the plain-edged version a few days ago and just had to get it's companion. Really sweet knife. I was lucky SFO still had one of each! Being "backards", as Sal refers to us as, is handy at times: the right-handed versions are sold out.

Hey Sal - in the world of lefties, righties are "backards"! :D

Codeman, once I've used my "flail wildly, scream, throw and run" maneuver, I'm done with any "defensive" knife handling.

:D

Think I'm............also............about an hour away from just putting the clip back on.

:footinmou :grumpy: :(

If you've got a gun store or gun show handy, they may have some sandpaper like grips that attach to a handgun grip via an adhesive backing. I think it's called skateboard tape in some places. You could easily put a small strip of that down the side of the grip, though it might not be too pocket friendly.

The rough texture is very durable, so I'm pretty sure that would give you the "grip" you're looking for.

Don't give up yet!

Yeh, I've used skateboard tape on my guns. Still have some. Not the answer for reason you stated. It .....GRABS.....like crazy. Nice on gun but not pocket.

No......what I've done is take the damn glue off the damn knife and put the damn clip back on. And now I'm thinkin about filing a slot in the damn clip so the damn thing can be taken on an off without takin out the damn screw so if I wanna put a damn lanyard on the damn thing, I can do it without removing the whole damn screw. But then I begin to think that without the damn back part of the damn clip, the damn thing may fall off an make me say "dammit."

What makes me so damn mad is that Sal is probably laffin his damn head off knowing that the damn thing is designed to be used like it comes in the damn box and some damn fools can't get that through their damn heads and end up doin damn fool stuff like this.

I surrender.

;) :( :D

The only thing worse that seeing what you want and not quite being able to reach it, is having someone you don't know give you a hard timeabout it. But...

Why not glue the knife to your hand? It'll hold real good, it won't rub your pockets the wrong way, and you won't have to be swapping the clip on and off all the time? :p

Sorry....couldn't resist.

It's darned aggravating when something is almost, but not quite, right. I've wanted a Military since I first saw one, but I'm a lefty. I just won't buy a right-handed knife. If I had even a remote chance of being able to take one apart and re-assemble it lefty, I would've tried years ago.

Your last post did make me laugh, so...

Pachmayr used to sell sheets of the rubber that their grips are made of. Pac-Skin has a good adhesive backing, and it's not much thicker than the sandy stuff. I've never shopped here, but http://www.gunaccessories.com/PachmayrRecoilPads/PacSkin.asp has a picture. It's no as grippy as skateboard tape, but it might be enough to make a difference. BTW - don't get the D cell flashlight version, unless you want it for a D cell flashlight. I've got one and it works great, but it's a tube without any adhesive. I buy the multi-purpose 15x20" sheet.

If you want to PM or email an address to me, I have a scrap that should be enough for a Delica. I'll be glad to send it no charge.

Thanks for offer, Codeman, but I believe I will take the position that no knife should ever be altered as it destroys the purity of the maker's intent. :D

AND.......that I....did....cave and TRY the skateboard tape and it felt great ....BUT....it ........................................ S L I D........

The little crescent wonderful piece of work I did would just ...e v e r...s o.... s l i g h t l y......b e g i n....... t o ........ MOVE ....when I applied any pressure.

So, I can now say with genuine pleasure that the Spyderco Delica is a perfectly conceived knife which needs NO modifications to suit ...all... users.
