Sal, just curious which would you perfer personally for self defense in general? Serrated Military or the Civilain. And the reasons why?

While I respect the power of the Civilian I find slashing only knives feel limiting. I like the flow of going from thrusting to slash and back again when I train. I would also feel uncomfortable not having the option to thrust if I was caught in a small confined area (elevator) with some bad guy who had a lot of size on me or was ampped up on drugs?

But perhaps I am predjudiced since the serrated Military was my favorite knife.

Weapon - The Military is a more versatile model, to be sure, not not really designed for combat. More as a workhorse.

From a shear "defense" point of view, I would opt for the Civilian defending against an aggressor. Hit and get outa there. No real need for thrust as I would not be tryng to do anything more than stop the aggression. And that is asssuming my mouth couldn't do the job. the "Civilian" cuts well.

I know the question was for Sal, but.....strictly for defense I would say the civilian, especially for someone who has not trained alot. Very simple and effective to use. However the design isn't very utilitarian. Hopefully we are not in a defense situation very often. The military would certainly do very well in a defensive situation and if the knife fits your fighting style better then all the better. If I could only carry one it would be the military.
