Sal, a long time ago there was talk of the possibility of a dendritic cobalt Military.

What did your research show on the alloy and is the knife still a possibility?

Sal,

I'm gonna have to say, that would kick ass.

The only thing I see with that is that it would most likely be very cost prohibitive and take a long damn time to grind.

I agree whole-heartedly.

6K is good ......that will turning this knife into a Super knife

6K military with compression Lock .....a perfect concept

I have about a dozen cobalt blades cast. About the same in Dendritic 440C. We're just snowed right now and haven't been able to get the test pieces finished and into handles.

I'll dig 'em out and see.

Sal,

I have heard bad things about grinding the cobalt alloys to a very thin edge geometry. I was just thinking about that, there might be a problem with the edge of a full flat grind like the Military chipping rather badly.

I have yet to play with a blade of this material however, so I have no first hand experience, just trying to add some food for thought.

I'll be among the first in line to pick one up if they work well though

I've got one 6K DDR ArcLite and Rob's Talonite Kanji

they all work fine in light chopping chores

the Arclite is the Full flat ground Blade

and I never have the blade chipping problem

it just keep cutting and cutting and cutting

if Sal gonna make the 6k Military then it will be great

a never rust blade none magnetism signature and can work in high temperature as a fire poker , what is going to perform better then this in the field ......that will be a perfect blade to work in the field

Thanks Sal'

please keep us posted on the progress and I will be delighted to test drive one!

Tique. That's why I would prefer to test it. We do our own initial testing on most new materials for us. However, even then, new materials always present their "challenges".

440c is 440c, what makes this steel sudenly something to get excited about?

David Boye casts his blades from 440C which gives them a dendritic crystalline structure. A lot of people swear by the edge which results.

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Gentlemen,
we are not talking about steel here.
There is no iron in dentric cobalt or in stellite.
Instead it is cobalt; which changes tha alloy's character drastically.

hope this helps

I've got one of David Boye's BDC folders. I can vouch for blade edge retention on this material after owning it for 9 months now, I've sharpened it once....and I use it everyday!!

As for something as large as the Military....that could be WAAAAY too expensive just to produce. The BDC folders are about $120 - $130, and that's the average price for a Military in CPM440v. Just from my standpoint, that would put the tag on the Military in the $300 range for the cobalt!!!
