I'll second that motion. My old grey and blue aluminium Centofantes are my absolute favourite knives for EDC. I figure my knives are used for much the same things as most people in an urban environment. Things like peeling and cutting up fruit, opening mail, removing splinters and sharpening pencils. The modified Wharncliffe of the Centofante is perfect for these tasks. The lack of belly means that the maximum amount of cutting edge is presented to the object being cut. The point is fine enough for detail tasks (like removing splinters) and low enough for jobs like cutting out coupons. The thin blade and full flat grind give excellent edge geometry especially when back bevelled to 30 degrees. My only complaint is that there is currently nothing similar in the Spyderco line-up . How about it Sal?
Sounds like the new Yojimbo design will fit the bill. It doesn't have a release date yet but pics can be seen at Spyderco's own forum in the MBC section. I agree, the wharncliff is a very useful blade style for EDC.
It looks like one of the $expensive$ custom types that is not intended for the everyday person; kind of like the ATR. Us average 'joes' can get away with forking over $50+- some, but when we talk knives counted in the several hundreds - that leaves alot of us out. And that is ok - no whine here (especially since I am out of cheese and crackers).
You are right though - that is a blade that would fit the bill. Now if Sal would put something like that in a VG-10, or s30v in a lightweight handle, those of us who could afford a Native or SpyderHawk could afford a Wharncliff of great value and utility. After all, that is why I came back to Spyderco ....
The Yojimbo is a great design but it is a fairly aggressive looking knife for use amongst "sheeple". I would like to see more of a "gentleman's folder". IIRC correctly there was a prototype of an upscaled Kiwi shown at Shot. That sounds more like what I had in mind as long as it has a flat ground blade.
