Sal: I Want Better Steel for the Jester!

I love the design of the new Jester! I'm terribly jealous of my wife's micarta version.

My only regret about it is that I wish Spyderco would go ahead and make a small knife with a premium steel. I certainly understand why the market dictates that "little" knives not become too expensive, but...

Please consider a limited run of the Jester in one of the premium steels for us knifenuts! :D How about a special edition in blue or green micarta with a 440V or VG-10 blade? I would be willing to pay the extra cost for the right materials and I suspect you could find enough others to make it worthwhile.

Hey, I'd buy a couple of those. Blue micarta (or carbon fiber) and VG-10 sounds pretty tasty to me.

I really like the design of the Jester, but have been holding off because of the blade steel. Dunno, I might pop for an FRN for my son, but if there was a collectors/special edition Jester, I'd snap up two or three for myself.

Chad,

Remember, there is a special edition Jester, with burgundy micarta scales. Only 1000 being made. I bought one last week from Mike Dye at New Grahamn. This was my first real introduction to the Jester, and I like it very very much.

Hmmmm.... I think that a Bladeforums special Jester would be very very cool (with the VG10 and blue micarta). I would buy a couple! :D

I bought one of those for my wife for Valentine's Day. :) Still, we both would like to see one with better steel. And blue micarta would look awfully spiffy.

Sorry Bob. At this time, not likely. If the Jester is well received, then we'll more than likely make some variations. We have a stainless handle concept model we've been showing and it has gotten some good response. Personally, I would like a Carbon Fiber version with VG-10.

Sal, thanks for the response. I agree, carbon fiber and VG-10 would be pretty dang spiffy. I have a CF Dragonfly that I frequently take out just to admire the scales -- almost hypnotic . Anyway, as much as I'd like to see better steel on the Jester, I'd imagine that production costs would be prohibitive.

Now for the real question. As I understand it, the AUS-6,7,8 steels are roughly comparable to the 440 A,B and C steels -- where the heat treat makes all the difference in the world. What's the heat treat/RC on the Jester, and what're your projections for wear and edge holding?

Thanks!
Chad

Hi Chad. We've been using AUS-6 (6A) on various knives for the past 20 years. We've got the heat treat down. Edge retention will be on a par with the Stainless Endura.

We're also using AUS-6 on the Meerkat and Pride. It's better than the 420's no matter what they do. It's actually a good stainless steel, just not exotic.

I understand that the Jester will have to prove itself in the market first. I'm just hoping that you will find an up-scale version worth the trouble eventually. I like VG-10!

Also, your AUS-6 knives have all proven to be solid performers. As far as I can tell there really aren't any low-end Spydercos, just less expensive ones. :D

Despite the smiley, it was sincerely meant and very well deserved. You and your people not only do excellent work; so somehow manage to do it consistently. There are a lot of us out here who appreciate the effort that takes. Thank you!
