Sal, I've received what I think is SPAM under guise of "in partnership with Spyderco"

Sal,
I've received two emails from a company called ISC.org saying that they are making a "free" offer": In partnership with Spyderco knifes. We will be offering our exam free to all knife holders.
This sounds like phony stuff to me.
Thought you should know. I've forwarded the two emails to Joyce.
I thought forumites should be made aware

John

I got this also and just came on to the forums to see if anyone else had received it. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

A couple things could be happening here:
1. Spyderco sold a mailing list to this company compiled from forum membership at www.spyderco.com (I seriously hope this isn't the case)
2. Spark sold a mailing list to this company compiled from BFC users (I doubt it since I seem to recall Spark saying he would never do this)
3. This jackass, James E. Duffy, compiled a list from the email information he gathered from the forums.

There are probably other possibilities but those seem to be the most obvious. No matter what the case, I am seriously pissed off. I hope Spyderco wasn't involved in this. This is BS advertising taking over my mailbox with false claims in the subject: "Spyderco special offer." Well that's crap: there is no offer in the email that has anything to do with Spyderco.

If it is the third possibility I listed above, isn't there an illegality in this? Aren't there rules about composing profit-based mailing lists off of forums like this?

F*** Duffy, F*** ISC2, and F*** spammers.

EDIT - I've emailed a reply asking where he got my email address. I doubt I'll get a straight answer but it's worth a try.

And P.S. - sorry for my demeanor in this thread but this is really the kind of stuff that pisses me off. I make my email address available in my profile so that people can chat with me privately if they feel the need or take up an off-topic matter. I would seriously hate to change email addresses and make the new one semi-private just because ***holes like this abuse the system.

I have also received this mess so their reach of spamming is not limited to USA only...

Another mail from the same guy proposed to get some kind of paid sertification. I'm too lazy to read such mess completely...

Edited to add:
BTW, these mails do not look like mass corespondence, seems the guy have sent them individually to each recipient...

It really sounds like this spammer set up a bot to glean all the user emails in spyderco forum because I'm not registered there, and I don't have the spam mail as of now.
I doubt that he would've done it by hand. He probably set up some search engine and went through the user information. Perhaps you should ask people over in the spyderco forum who doesn't have the email available and see whether they had spam.
I seriously doubt Spyderco themselves would've done that. Anyone with some sense would've seen the reprecussion such as this.

I am not aware of any Spyderco partnership or promotion. Spyderco does not sell names under any circumstances. I would suggest that you do not make any commitments to this "Duffy" person. We'll look into it.

I emailed James E. Duffy at the same time I posted it here and on the Community board and at spyderco.com.
I received an email from him saying he was a victim of a hoax.
I'll give Sal & Spark time to look into it.
Just funny that, IF IT'S A HOAX he received email at his isc2.org email address, there is a isc.org website.
Also the name sounds familiar "James E. Duffy". Anyone else?

John

Well, I got it as well. I am a member here and at Spyderco's forums. Same isc2.org website, same bad grammar, same Duffy. What a meathead.

Ok, so it seems that he got our email addresses off of the Spyderco factory forum, not here.

His reply as to where he got my email? One line:
"I am victim of spoof."
BS!
His email address is jeduffy@isc2.org
The link he provides goes to www.isc2.org
He states in the second email that he is management at ISC2. So who fooled him?

He tried to use the forums for his own profit and now he's trying to duck out of the consequences by claiming he was fooled into spamming us. Riiiiiiiiiiight

I have blocked his address so I will no longer receive correspondences from him or his crooked company.

EDIT - I also reported his address to Yahoo's SpamGuard so hopefully they will filter his Spam from reaching others. If you use Yahoo mail and got this, please do the same.

I an a member of both forums, but have not gotten it yet.

It matters whether you've allowed on the spyderco forum members to see your email I believe.

Before you get terribly pissed, it's actually quite easy to spoof an email address. As long as there's an open mail server that could allow anyone to send emails, one could have the sender address to be anyone he wants, be bgates@microsoft.com or whatever. There are tons of software out there to do so. That's why you don't reply to spammers because it is either not a valid address, the intended vengence mail victim, or the spammer himself, which if you do reply, you would've psychologically encouraged him and verify that your address is valid. What matters is whether the IP address corresponds to the email server that's supposed to be from isc2.org, and that to be frank can also be spoof too.
This is what happens whee technology is built without security in mind.

Must have been over looked. My email is avalable for the forum members to contact me.I have gotten several other emails with virus attachments in them.No problems i never open attachments unless I am sure who has sent them.

Or maybe the person only ran the engine for so long so that some of the spyderco forum members are not affected.
And as to the spoof mail, TOTC, I've just written spoof mail with your email address (well part of, using the domain of my own) to myself and it looks ok, as long as I type without error. With the aid of easily accessable software, it's no wonder that people can be spoofing victims.

France is under Spam Attack too !!!
What does it mean?

I need to report it to La Sureté !!!

cheers,

JM

Nemo: Someone apparently collected email from the spyderco forum (or perhaps in here to) and made that spam mail.

Well, I didn't get any spam and I feel left out.

Nemo is calling La Surete, so I'm calling the Mounties. Giddyup.

Don't send me free knives.
