Sal,
I was wondering if you could explain what factors make up the lateral strength of folders? Also could you give some examples of a stronger vs a weaker type of folder design?

Hi Troy. By lateral strength, I am assuming that you mean side to side at the pivot. Mostly (90%) the materials used to hold it together. Thicker or stronger materials are less likely to "give". Screwed together pivots, correctly made out of tougher materials will add strength. Tougher materials around the pivots hold better. Stiffer materials help. Tricks like heat treating metal scales add strength (but cost more).

Adding length to the handle in front of the pivot helps.

I think that very accurate tolerances make the biggest difference.

hope that helps.
