Sal, has the vg10 SPOT with new sheath shipped out to all dealers, in particular New Graham Knives? I need them and they're still waiting for delivery from Spyderco :p :D ![sorry for being impatient]

Also, has anyone put the new sheath through its paces? Will the SPOT fall out of the sheath? Any numbers on retention strength. I'm thinking of inverted carry on my pack strap - secured by blackhawk LBE bands and a back-up paracord retention line through one of the eyelets.

Will the sheath secure the knife through class 3 waters? Do you think the knife will fall out in a 30-40 foot leap from a waterfall?

I realise the SPOT wasn't designed for all that, but need to know the parameters of the sheath retention strength - if necessary I will duct tape the SPOT before leaping.

If I like the SPOT, I may consider custom sheathing.

Anyone?

but not the VG10 version?

btw, how is the quality of Spyderco's AUS6? edge holding? can it sharpen to a fine edge without chipping? I may consider the AUS6 version after my experience with VG10 and saltwater (see general discussion forum). I was planning on using the SPOT as a multi-purpose fixed blade - outdoors, river paddling, sea-kayaking, boat work, self-defense.

The skeleton version is AUS-6. We use genuine Aich AUS-6. Properly heat treated and with a cryogenic crunch. It is a tough rust resistant steel. "Edge getting and holding" may not be as good as the VG-10 (one of the exotics), but it is still a good steel with good characteristics (or we wouldn't be using it). The general market has been very pleased with the performance of our AUS-6 Delica's, Ladybugs, Jesters, and Meerkats (as we process the steel) . It is all of you steel snobs (me included) that YELL for the exotic steels (Which is why there is a VG-10 / micarta version). Time will tell which model survives. "There can only be one".

The custom made pin used to fill the hole is quite close tolerance and pressed in. Expansion holds it in. The VG-10 version's hole is several thou larger and will need a separete set up, so we're doing the AUS-6 version first. There were also more of the skeleton version on back-order.

The sheath is set to hold up to 10 lbs direct pull. One could "yank" in from the sheath (big motion, IMO), or use the thumb push off for which it was designed (small, controlled motion, IMO).

In our "drop test", it must hold a drop from 7', We have not tested 30'-40' drops. Mike Sastre might be better able to answer that question. He's very familiar with Boltaron sheaths and Spyderco products.

sal,

does that mean the new micarta handled SPOTS with the tension-thing have NOT been shipped out yet? I was under the impression that they had been from a previous post by you - so been bugging the dealers to get one for me....

btw, the "finish" of the skeleton is bead blast only, right? I personally prefer a satin finish (like on VG10)

could you clarify? if not out yet, when is the ETA?

thanks,
spyken

Spyken ~ Dude! The new and improved S.P.O.T is pretty impressive! Can I check it out when I next visit Singapore?

Samo,
sure, if the VG10 is out and when I get it....am trying to get it through NewGrahamKnives. I may just try AUS6 for the SPOT cos of the corrosion resistant properties. VG10 rusts rather quickly in saltwater (fully immersed).

not sure from the TAD pictures whether the skeletal AUSG version is brushed satin (or normal Spyderco steel) finish or beadblast....I dun like beadblast.....

Spme VG-10's shipped, but not many. The Skeletal version is bead blasted. The VG-10 version will also be shipping this month.
