Sal,

Good day to you. I am dying to know a little information. I was wondering what the reaction was at the SHOT Show to the UUK. I have heard that you are waiting to see what overall reaction was before you started producing it. This is the one that I am really waiting for. Do you know yet if you are going to produce this one? Any info would be Wonderful.

Thanks and have a Great day!

I'll take one.

I personally really like the Folding UUK..I pointed it out to many people at the Shot Show..as with the GUNTING..without explaination most people just move on..
Laci has really cool ideas that sometimes go past the average knife person...

Look for a new variation of the Folding UUK to make it even more MBC-Spydie..
Compression Frame lock...spoon clip? Kinetic opener...slightly curved handle for more ergonomoics and retention of Laci's famed lower guard..

I own a Folding UUK # 23....

When that MBC variation comes out, I'll have to get one.

The big Spyder is going to keep my wallet pretty thin.

the proto type thats on display has a liner lock frame lock and a hole...made by Allen Elishewitz
As with all protos and customs it needs a few tweaks to make it really an MBC Spydie..soooooo Hold onto your hats..
When that Proto comes out I'm sure people will REALLY notice..of course I'll be talking it up...

Al..Al...of course you're good for it..ONLY I bought that #23 many years ago..LOL..its the Custom Hand made Elishewitz one...NOT the Spydie one

historical note:
Laci was working on the folding UUK and I was doing models and drawings of the old Escalator...We would hold up the drawings and we used to laugh that they were mirror image of each other..

Spoon clip? Like on some Eli's? I'm not too keen on those but if that's the popular option then please make them black or with a matte finish. IMO shiny chrome clips are loudmouths that shout, "Hey everybody, look over here--a knife!" I think we should not unnecessarily scare the public with showy accessories. Just my $0.02

I agree on the black clip, but I believe Spyderco is already taking care of it, as far as the next batch of Guntings go (right, Sal?).

What is a UUK when it's at home? Is there a picture of one available?

Gad, and here I thought that the Gunting was odd looking.

While I do appreciate Bram's Gunting (great design and excellent construction), I really like the distinct differences in the design of the UUK. It simply matches my personal prefernces a bit better. I am eagerly anticipating the release of the MBC version of the UUK. Let's see...G-10, dual liners for the compression lock, spoon-style matte black clip that allows deep pocket carry (place it high--I know, but the draw will work), CPM440V as thick as the Chinook.

Anything else?

I just talked to Laci..he also has approved of and is awaiting the final tweaking of his infamous folding UUK into an MBC...I( I am honored that Laci, who is like a brother to me..will let me tweak his knife design ...)

due to the angle of the blade and the Kin-Op system it will sit much deeper than a GUNTING...and of course SKUNKWORKS will also make a breakaway holster for it too..
and of course it will have a DRONE as well..

Thanks for the heads-up Bram! That is what I intended to say (i.e., higher clip placement on the knife for lower pocket carry). Looks like it will be a fantastic design in it's own right. The holster will be very welcome. Who offers them for your Gunting design?

ak for Frank ...hes very friendly and makes great plastic!!!

Reaction thus far has been "good" or "not at all". Depends on the interest in MBC.

We're off to IWA next. That's the European "SHOT Show" in March.

Then we'll modify the design working with Laci & Bram for Blade Show.

Probably a Compression Lock (for strength). MBC rating on this model would have to exceed 600 inch/lbs. tough to do with a framelock or linerlock.

Naturally we're interested in anything you have to say about it.

I had hoped someone would have posted their own insight into possibilities for the UUK. Other than the specs listed above (and all of them were already present in other Spyderco knives), I will add the following:

The knife begs to be held in a reverse grip, ala' korambit. Therefore I would curve the handle slightly more to offer a better grip in reverse style, but not so much it detracts from a hammer type grip. Also, I don't see present on the UUK a small protrusion on the butt of the handle for punyos. It could be the spacer, but it needs to be a small surface area to maximize impact and constructed of metal. The handle is already 5" long, so perhaps the butt of the handle could be constructed entirely of stainless by not having some of the G-10 slabs come all of the way to the end, and butt simply coming to a graduated protrusion for striking.

Hey, just some thoughts....

I appreciate the opportunity for considered input.

All that is done already...As I said ( and Sal) its on ongoing proto evaluation...so to make it SPYDIE MBC its been tweaked...
Slightly curved handle..allowing the lower guard to still exist yet housed..
and a touch easier to hold...
Laci had requested a framelock which is why a compression frame lock like the ATR came to mind..since it is use in both grips.ala GUNTING spoon clip and indexing point..used in unique situations? Ok the Kin-Op system as well ( wasn't too big a jump..had to have a place for the SPYDIE hole anyways...)
Butt of the knife has a striking section added as well..
Blade is not chisel ground but two sided grind...

This is an upcoming future project..
feed back is important..

I'm sure as MBC gets going it will allow greater interest and inspection of Laci's very cool design. Plus..I think it will be a great addition to the MBC..
but its on the long line with the other protos & concept knives..
SPYDIE makes great knives..
but it takes time, energy and careful development...
Don't hold your breath..buy other SPYDIES and just when you think its not coming..it will be here..

If I had held my breath waiting on my GUNTING.well its been a very long haul..
I took Protos to RUSSIA a year ago..and that was 9 months after my drawings/design work out at Spydie...
14 months after Patent filing...

In the world of Knives ..very quick,,in My time..antagonizingly long..soooo
Buy GUNTINGS and wait for the Folding UUK..
( see I got that plug in there!)

I prefer micarta or ti scales. These materials make for more comfortable IWB carry and IMO allow smoother and quicker draws from the pocket. G-10 is okay when drawing from a kydex sheath but I'm not a big fan of that option (it's extra weight and added bulk to carry). Also, VG-10 is my preference for the blade.
