Hi Sal and participants of the Spring Contest,

Maybe it's because English is not my mother tongue, but I was extremely surprised and disappointed when Sal announced ONE/SINGLE winner of the spring contest. From Day 1 of the contest I was 100% sure that 3 winners are going to be declared (one for each one of the prices) - It seems that I am not the only fool who was thinking that, as at least one other participant I know of was under that same impression.Needless to say, that looking forward for 3 winners was a nice incentive for me to invest/donate $50 (more than 8% of total sum of money collected during that fundraising)
I took a good look again at the original post of Sal and found no clue to the fact that only 1 winner is going to be announced. Quite the opposite, here is a quote from the original post:
"...Here's the deal;

Prizes:

1. Bob Lum Tanto + "The Spyderco Story" ($6.00)

2. Prototype Military Model - ATS-34, Carbon Fiber Scales + "The Spyderco Story" ($10.00)

3. Original Jess Horn Clipit Model C27 + "The Spyderco Story" ($10.00)

One may enter for one or all. Send in the appropriate amount letting us know which is your choice. One may enter as many times as one chooses..."

What do you make of this ? The word "Prizes:...." ? I honestly understood that ALL 3 Prizes are going to distributed. It didn't say "Prizes to choose from" or as it was specifically mentioned in the original Free contest posting:

"...The rules:

Post your choice (one only) of those models listed. We'll print out, cut up and draw a winner. Contest ends 15 JUN 00.

The Choices:....."

From this you can clearly understand that the detailed prizes are only "Choices" and that only 1 "winner" will be drawn - This is definitely not the case with the spring contest rules.

I think that we, spring contest participants, should be treated with the same courtesy you showed toward the free contest participants and declare on 2 aditinal winners. Why do people who just entered a free contest deserve a better attitude than people who sent money for a good cause ? Besides - In the free contest rules it was 100% clear to me that only 1 winner is going to be announced, which was definitely not the case with the spring contest rules...

What do you think ?

I read "a winner" as one winner.

The intention here was to get funds to a good cause. I'm not sure I understand the thought of being treated like the "free contest" participants, especially since I participated in the free contest as well.

Anytime I participate in a fundraising raffle, my assumption is simply contributing money to a cause. I don't expect to win and mostly never do. The one time I did, it was just "gravy."

Dear Sing,

First of all, regarding the quote "a Winner" - That was so clear to you - It was taken from the FREE Contest posting ! and Yes, you - just like myself, understood that only one winner is going to be drawn in the FREE Contest. This was clear even to (foolish) me ! That was not the case with the Spring Contest Rules. Got my Point ?

I never suggested that my only motive to participate in this blessed fundraising was my intention to win the contest. All of us wanted to help a children hospital wherever it is located and of course the prizes are just a bonus. Having cleared that point I must admit that I am not even slightly sorry for the money that went to a good cuase. I just protest the fact the rules of the contest were unclear and misunderstood by (foolish) me - and maybe by some others.

I respect your views and I hope you understand / respect mine

Take care
AG

AG,

No problem. I get your "point" now.

As a participant in both contests, I didn't really read the instructions too carefully. I actually posted that I didn't in the Spring Contest thread.

My thought was to just participate and support something Sal intended to be fun and beneficial.

Take care,

Sorry for the confusion AG. I will be more specific in the future. The actual plan was one winner for each contest. We selected 3 in the free contest because there were so many more entrants than the last contest.

sal

I was under the same impression (3 knives up for grabs in the $ raffle) and was tripley impressed at Spydie generousity...initially.
I only mention it so AG doesn't appear the only one underwhelmed.

I agree with you guys. IMHO, the rules were not clear. However, the $ did go to a good cause.

Hi all!

List me upas foolish too. I also had the impression of three contests going on.

From the post I read I was confirmed in my opinion. "Write me down for all 3;" for me meant : I'll participate in all three contests.
I wasn't aware of the real meaning: I'll buy a ticket for each knife + the book in this one contest.
The same goes for:"Clay and I have coughed up, and gone for different raffles to prevent squabbling " which I interpreted as: Clay and Ferret are in, but the take part in different contests, so they will not interfere each other.
In real world it meant: ach of us buys a ticket for a different knife + the book, so if one of us is going to win there are no bad feelings.
But I have to admit that the topic say's it all:" Time for a Spring Contest" and Sal did never talk about more than one contest.

I've learned a lesson.

Greetings

PS.: Forgot to mention: I've an idea for you Sal: To make it easier for you to collect the money from us oversea's guy's (+girl's): Let the local distributor pic a local children's hospital to send the funds to. (this will do the good cause and is much easier to handle.)

Hi All (foolish) Ones !

You see Sal, although English is NOT my mother tongue I wasn't the only one who misunderstood the contest rules:

1. Ferret - from Australia
2. Big Tex - from Texas
3. Ewok - from California
4. red mag - from Europe
5. cerulean - from Colorado
6. Clay Kesting - from Australia
7. Gary W. Graley - from PA, USA
8. thebeak - from FL, USA
9. David Reidling - TX, USA

and if I might say our good friend Scorpio was also among us who didn't quite understand the rules and thought that 3 winners were going to be drawn.

That is 11 participants (not counting others who didn't had a chance to post yet) out of approx. 22 people who attended (I counted those who posted) That's 50% - Half of the participants understood that there are going to be 3 winners/3 Prizes drawn!

If such a large group was led to think that 3 prizes were going to be drawn - I think it's only fair that you give away those remaining prizes, if only not to leave us with a bad taset in our mouth.

Thanks
AG

I must admit that I also thought there would be three different winners: one for each knife.

Well, time to be counted I suppose. I was also under the impression that there were to be 3 prizes. However I can't agree with AG that the other prizes should be awarded now. The amount raised ($600

) hardly justifies giving away 3 prizes of such value, to my mind it is a piddling amount which would barely cover the cost of the prizes. It would be far better for Sal to keep them for another raffle (with clearer rules

) so that more money can be raised for the hospital.

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Sal, I have to agree, as that was how it sort of reads, where you say you can enter one or all? All being plural, lead us all to think we had a pretty good chance to win maybe one of them?

But I see the point, if you only received a small amount then it wouldn't pay to give it away....

My English isn't always the best either...

add me to the "i misunderstood list"

no biggie, that means sal still has MY CF military (so i can win it next time...)

my only question: if it was only one raffle, why were there two ticket prices? two were knife and book for $10 a wack and one was $6 a whack. my donation would have bought more tickets if i had asked for the $6 tickets.

It seemed to be clear that there were to be three winners, that's why there were three prizes with different ticket prices for each. Bad contest but at least the money went to a good cause.

well as long as we all agree that the money went to a worthwile cause, then were all ok.

Hi all!
I'm with Clay.
to thebeak: I'm sorry for you, but the CF-Military has my name on it.

ferret and the beak,
i don't know how to break it to you,but the CF military has my name on it since my police CF feels rather lonely without his military counter part.
why break a great combination,right?
