Sal,
I'm really not sure how much it helps to strop a blade, input would be wonderful, but I was wondering if there will ever be a Spyderco strop.4 ft.Black durable stropping leather on one side.Spyderco printed in Big letters on the back with a big 'ol bug emblem.A D-loop for attatchment on one end,and an instruction manual. My belts about had it from learning how to do it.This would be a great hunting/field necessity?

Hi Whosyour. It sounds neat, but.....probably not something we would do unless we made straight razors.

You will probably find mady who disagree with me, but it is my humble opinion that; stropping a sharp edge will actually "draw" out a relatively uneven "wisp" of a burr. On a straight razor this burr is larger and even more uneven. It is this burr that actually works best when shaving hair and that is why a razor is stropped. When a razor is starting to lose its "edge", one goes to the strop to again bring out the burr. This may be done even during a single shaving.

One should not have to sharpen a razor more than once or twice a year (with daily shaving) if one strops often. Touching the burr with the tip of your finger will break off the burr and then you are back to square one in creating the burr. That is why one should never "feel" the edge of a "using" razor with your finger. Touching the edge with anything harder than a hair will break off the burr that was created by the strop. Sooooo....in my humble opinion, it doesn't pay to strop an edge unless you are using it to shave hair with, and then you NEVER touch it with anything harder than a hair.

Thank you Sal,
I know I could shave with most spydercos but those serrations keep getting in the way:)
Always figured on the white stones to be best for my user.

So how about a straight razor.

It's (at this time) a pretty small market that is being adequaately filled by other companies. Companies like Dovo make very good razors.

I will say that it is an interesting experience (adventure) to learn to maintain a straight razor and shave one's face with it every day.

Hey Jeff. Fun, focus, control, courage, persistence and education.

Don't do it for speed or convenience.

Check with Brian Heugel at Country knives (Intercourse< PA). He has a lot of related product.

Mr. Glesser,

It is a wonderful experience to shave with a straight razor, especially one you maintain yourself. From seeing your pic in the nov 2000 or 2001 Blade magazine including the beard you sport, what makes you qualified to even comment on this? Just joking with ya man.

Anyway, the beauty of using the straight razor is, if you get good with sharpening and shaving with it, you dont have to shave every day. Somehow it does a better job than any triple or double bladed store bought piece does, and it is COST EFFECTIVE to use the damn thing. I had a cheapie frost cutlery straight razor which rusted silly from just the short exposure to my salty skin becuase it was crazy-high carbon I figure. This knife took the most unbelievable edge, finally it met its maker when I dropped it and it landed the wrong way. Consequently, after buying a few $40 razors I have gone back to Individual twin-blade Gilette's I just dont have any more time!!!
