Sal: Spyderco Sailor's Knife?

I remember there being some talk a while back about a sailor's knife with a folding marlinspike. Is there any chance it might still happen? I've been learning some interesting knotwork lately, and it's a pain in the butt to carry around a knife with a marlinspike in it. I'm generally trying to get my EDC as elegant as possible, and no sailor's knives on the market come close to a SAK as a multitool. Building the spike into my one-handed Spyderco would be much more efficient.

So is the sailor's knife still on the menu? Or was it dropped?

If there's still a chance of production, and any wiggle room left in the design, I'd like to make a few suggestions:

1 - That it be made in either a standard blade shape or a BM Griptilian-like "modified sheepsfoot", to make the knife more versatile than the traditional sheepsfoot.

2 - That it be made availaible in plainedge. I know that Spyderco's found plainedge sheepsfoot blades don't sell very well, but when I'm doing work that requires a marlinspike, I generally want a clean cut more than a fast cut.

3 - (And this one's a bit out-there) If possible, a "Swedish fid" or "hollow" marlinspike would be amazing. I've never seen one on a folding knife before, and I'd imagine the machining costs would go through the roof, but if it could be done economically, it'd be a major advantage, IMHO.

It's wonderful to see how hard Spyderco strives to meet the needs of niche markets (like the recent "pickle knife" and "waved Endura" concepts), and I really hope you think there's enough of a potential market to go through with this design. :D

I saw the Sailor's knife at the Blade show. It's a very nice knife. Talking with Sal's son he said their working on it. The ball lock on the spike is tough to do right he said. So I imagine after they get the the manufacturing process right we may see it. I know I'm looking forward to it!

Any news on it Sal?

It's still in developemt.

Grover 1) It is a modified sheepfoot blade
2) It will be available with a plain edge
3) not likely, but thanx. Maybe in the future. But personally, I think a hollow fid should be separate from a knife.

Sal, if you are following this thread - will the marlinspike be one-hand operable? I have been envisioning a spike with a big bump like a Toucan-head with a hole in the hump to use for opening the spike.

The spike is one hand operable. no opeing hole. The opening hole is in the blade.
