Sal, What's the Criteria for Lockback vs Linerlock?

Hello.
I am curious as to how Spyderco decides what lock to use on any given knife. Does it depend on size, thickness, weight or what? Also, if you consider your new compression lock superior to both of these, why don't you start using these on all of your future knives.
I am very curious about this.
Thank you very much.
What about you spydernuts? Do you prefer one over the other, or is one better for certain types of knives?

Hi Pergatory. If the design was from collaboration, we generally go with the choice of the designer.

If it's an in-house design, it depends on the requirements of the design.

The Compression lock is a new lock with much promise, but time will tell us more.

Could you please expand a little on what you mean by "requirements of design"

Thanks.

I guess some examples would be;

The Cricket's oval shape could not work with anything but a linerlock.

The same goes for the Bob Lum Chinese folder. The lnerlock as Michael Walker invented it, permits versatility of design. Lockbacks require more room.

The Chinook, being an MBC rated lock, needed very higher lock strength (200 inch/lbs. per inch of blade length. Not achievable with a linerlock (at least not that we've been able to do) and the Compression lock is still too new to put on everything.

The Endura and Delica models were created for a large audience. The general knife buyer is more familiar with and has more confidence in lockbacks.

Because of legal pressures in some countries (such as the UK), we're working on a slip joint folder (does not lock open).

Hope this helps.

I see, you just mentioned the Uk, you also just mentioned the tough laws over here. Hope you don't mind me butting in from over here in Robin Hood land

Tell me more about the "slip joint folder" forgive my ignorance but what does this mean? I usually carry a Delica, have 2 of these as well as a Cricket but these are all a problem if I am going to be anywhere where being searched is possible.

Wait wait wait...

A slip joint folder?

What is that Sal?

I know it does not lock, but exactly?

So will you make a 3" folder that does not lock for us Brits?

That would be sooooo cool!

BTW, I am interested in opinions as to why a liner lock at all?

My thoughts were that a LL is less likely to accidently release thru top pressure on the knife, and to allow one handed closing.

The lockback does seem tougher however.

Are these the reasons?

Cheers!

Sal how about a UK marked Delica with the slip joint thingy!

Yeah, me too, want one, want one!!!
Love the Delica. Nice idea Genaral, a Uk marked one.

What is the timescale on this?

General, as far as I understand it, your comments on the liner lock are correct, ie less likely to release the blade by gripping the handle too tight etc. The lockback on the Delica 2 is better with the cut out on the release. I like the handle on the new Delica as well, slightly larger and easier to grip than the earlier ones.

Cool! And you wory about carrying a Delica and Cricket!

My average carry is a LCC D/A, Spyderco Military and locking SAK Adventurer.

Oh and thats for work
