Why is Spyderco the only maker that won't let dealers advertise low selling prices on their knives ? I want to open a catalog or view a website, and be able to compare prices maker vs. maker and dealer vs. dealer. This "call for price" nonsense is rather annoying, and is a dis-incentive to buy Spyderco.

I think the major discussion about the pricing is in the Blade Discussion forum: Year 1. Try the "search". Hope this helps.

There was also a discussion of it in Mike's Bladeforums magazine. However I may be able to summarize, the parenthesized text is my additional comment:

Setting (artificially) high MSRP prices adds to the perception of quality (Only once, then the buyers know MSRP has no basis in reality)

Making sellers hide their discount prices is an attempt to keep their old time distributer network (the ones who charge higher prices) from getting upset.

BTW, Most of the sites show their prices, if you get a "call for prices", move on, they are not worth bothering with.

Spyderco isn't the only company to do this.

There are some companies that go even further and set minimum selling prices.

I just did a quick scan of 4 On-Line Dealers that I trust and every one of them clearly listed prices on Spyderco's significantly lower than MSRP.

So if a Dealer is telling you to call for prices on Spyderco's it isn't necessarily because of Spyderco policies.

RH - XYZ company advertises a very low price on a Spyderco model. Because of "price shopping", many of the dealers carrying the same model cannot sell it at a reasonable price because of company XYZ advertising the very low price. XYZ company cannot get the model or deliver the model, primarily becuase of the greater demand or because they are not legitimate Spyderco dealers. The end result is that they are simply hurting the sales of the model.

This is an oversimplification of the problem, but it will give you a general idea of what we are facing. Our regular dealers that we work with stop ordering the model because it doesn't pay for themm to "give it away" and they can't compete with the very low advertized price.

hope that helps.
