Hey guys, just thought I'd give you all a heads up. They are selling SAK Sportsmen II at Big Lots. They have the red nylon scales, and are going for $7. SEVEN DOLLARS!?!?!?!?!?!? Holy CRAP!!! I got one today, and it's going to be my new EDC. It was my first SAK, the Sportsman pattern, and I got all nostalgic. Plus, at $7, you just CAN'T go wrong. Probably THE best bang for your buck. I'm gonna use this til it dies.... which they really aren't known for doing. Love those nylon scales. Gotta love SAKs.

I shopped around online a bit, and $7 is a very low price, even compared to the big retailers like SMKW. Is that model being discontinued?

I've only recently become interested in Accumulating SAKs. With such high production numbers and an unattainable variety, it's been difficult in the past to become interested. But collecting discontinued models at huge discounts has piqued my interest. My favorites so far at the sport-specific Wengers (Snowboarder, Soccer, etc.) that I found for $4 or less.

My co-worker came back from Big Lots a few days ago and bought a $7 SAK.

It's a nice knife at a bargain price.

A GREAT knife at a bargain price. Let's face it, when it comes to performance, SAKs can go. They can hang with the best of them. This Sportsman is my new companion. It hasn't replaced my Peanut as my favorite pocket knife pattern, nor my Alox SAKs, but for now, it's my new work horse. Heck, for the price, if it gets beat up, abused, or lost, who cares. Hmmmm. Maybe I will test to see what a SAKs tolerances are with this one.

Looks like i'll be making a trip to Big-Lots today....

Thanks for the heads up.

I don't think so. The Sportsman II is a Victorinox 'economy' model, so it actually retails for a low price (but is still a great deal at $7).

This thread from the multitool forum gives more info. In a nutshell, economy models have nylon rather than cellidor scales. I personally prefer my economy models for dirty jobs because the textured scales provide a great grip. These models go through the same manufacturing process and are of the same Victorinox quality.

And to give you all another heads up on a good deal. Our local Wal-Mart had their Super Tinkers on sale for $15.00 in a clam pack.

i found a couple Camper/LED packs on clearance for $6 a while back at K-Mart and gave one to a co-worker that had some awful freebie no-name SAK

the little LED lights are like $10 alone, i went looking for more at another store, but didn't find any

I think you are really better off with the nylon scales, than the regular red plastic that Victorinox calls cellidor. The cellidor seem to degrade after some years, and are very vulnerable to certain solvents and chemicals. I had to send my tinker back to Victorinox twice over a 12 year period when it inadvertantly came in contact with alcohol, or something else. Victorinox was nice enough to put new scales on it each time, but I've since switched to alox handled saks like my cadet 2 and Wenger SI.

I don't know why Victorinox won't use the nylon as thier main handle material, its way better.

I always duck into Big Lots to see what's been added. Always lots of junk, with the occasional "diamond" on a fairly regular basis. Last Fall I bought some Meguiar's Soft-Bristle car washing brushed for $3.00 each - and they were $17.99 at the local auto store. Unfortunately, like TJ Maxx (a great place to find watch bargains these days!) not every location receives the same inventory.
