I have some decent/fine knives for sale and thought I would post my Q. here b/c of the traffic. I don't want to wind up on the "Beware of him" list. Is there a standard protocol about who pays shipping, how payment is made, returns, etc. For instance, my Microtech Socom m/a born 12/97 has barely noticable blade scuffs, is still w/ the factory edge and is otherwise pristine. If I am complete in my description but someone who buys feels I am inaccurate, is there a code here of Just send it back? I am a JUDGE in PA and would volunteer to mediate these sorts of disputes if there is a need for same. I would like to know the standard procedure so as not to breach protocol in the meantime.

Geoff,

Welcome to the forums.

I would suggest that your best bet would be to describe everything as well as you can, and to be somewhat conservative in your description. If there are minor scratches then by all means either describe them or better yet try to get them to show in a photo. The idea is to exceed the buyer's expectations.

If a customer elects to return the item then let them pay for the return freight and you refund the purchase price (less cost of shipment). The item should be returnned to you within a reasonable period of time and in the exact condition that you shipped it.

For best results you should clearly post your return policy with the sales offer.

Geoff,
Good topic.Look at the FAQs for some of the answers. The knife you described would be considered nearly new, with an explaination of the scuffs.I would like to see a rule that all transactions have a 24-48 hour right to return agreement. This would insure that folks are getting their knives in as promised condition. This is not my original idea.I think I heard it from Jakyl. Most of the people here already accept returns, but a uniform rule would be a benefit.
I like the idea of having your experience as a arbitrator. We could televise it and call it The Knife Peoples Court:-)

Protocol? no. I have seen it go anywhere from "tough luck" to the buyer (me) to me taking back a knife because the guy's wife wouldn't let him keep it.

I think offering a 5 day +/- inspection period is fair. If the buyer returns the knife unused, uncarried, unsharpened by the end of that time, the seller should refund the purchase price less his shipping costs (buyer basically pays two way shipping for the inspection privilege).

Some sellers insist that if they are "accurate" then they have no return obligations. As long as they state that up front I take it into account while considering buying. I think disclosure and communication make for the best in this arena.

Welcome to BladeForums, Geoff. If you visit the Exchange section of Bladeforums, you'll find a forum entitled "knives for Sale/Trade - Individual." That is the place the management of BladeForums has set up to provide a place for you to advertise your knives. It's likely to be an effective place to do it. Glad you could join us. Take care.

Welcome to the forums, most people here are very honest and trustworthy. I think I have A good policy. If you buy A knife from me I will not cash your money order until you Email me and say the knife was received and satisfactory. If it is not send it back for A full refund - return shipping. I think that is fair. Brian
