Salida Cutlery and Smoke Shop-Meet the Maker- Custom Knife Show 2012 by Trent Rock's Visual Vices, on Flickr
I had a great time hanging out on a Sunday afternoon at The Salida Cutlery & Smoke Shop
It was 120 miles north from my house in Conejos County
Beautiful drive..went past the UFO WATCHTOWER®
(I got a hotel room, rode my mt. bike later that night and went fishing at a local lake...Salida is a chill town..I like it a lot)

Meet some cool makers
Saw my 1st ever forging demonstration (So that is how they do it!!!..lol) by Steve Rollert of Dove Knives and Keensburg, CO, fame
He was a great, funny, and informed teacher and I learned a a lot:thumbup:
Good weather, about 90 degrees

1 point on the second try

It's a great little store
Buck Knives and Marlboro Lights
What more could a guy ask for!!?? ;) :D

Are there many members here from THIS part of the world? Yep, I'm 40 minutes from Salida - it is a cool town. Too bad I had too much work to do to go to the event - looked fun (except the mousetrap on the tongue!! OWWW!

There is a knife maker on here who lives in Bayfield
I forgot his name:o

A knifemaker in Cortez

A couple in Del Norte area

One in Chama, New Mexico

Most of the action, as you know, is in the Denver area :(
I'm 5 miles above the New Mexico border

Some of the knife makers at the show came from NM

As you can see
The target market seemed like hunters, to me
I'm kind of picky when it comes to my handles
I am not a huge fan of stag or elk horn
Not sure why...lol
I'm kind of old school
I like leather handles!!
I'm not sure why custom makers don't use leather handles more
Durability? Perceived cheap material?

One of the guys made small knives outta Craftsman wrenches
I almost bought one as a neck knife
I'm kind of low budget out here :(
Not as much play money as I would like
It was fun seeing the forging demonstration
I learned quite a bit
Steve Rollert made it look really easy!!
If he wasn't so far away I'd probably take lessons from him
I've also been thinking of taking a class at Turley Forge
I want to make a SouthWest Colonial Era hocking knife
(Bet..you have never heard of a hocking knife!!)

One day I want to make a small backyard forge
I really want to make tomahawks, instead of knives
I think it must be the Apache blood in me ;)
