Salmon Running

I live in Penfield NY, And there is a creek near my home, Allen's creek to be exact. i have been a avid fisherman for years. But this year the salmon are running with a vengence. I caught one swimming up a small waterfall the other day. On weighing it i found it was 45 lbs.! What makes matters worse is that I have seen even larger ones surfacing. My problem is that when fishing no matter the bait or lure they will not bite. None of my fishing buddies have been able to catch ne with rod and reel either. I have no clue how to catch them (other than waiting for them to swim up the waterfall) Does ne one on here have ne ideas? the creek below the water fall (where they all are) is about 5-6 foot deep so bow fishing and nets wont works. And i cant see the bottom. NE Ideas on how to catch these monsters?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?
 
I fish the Salmon River and Oswego River...just east of you. Those fish are spawning and won't bite as if feeding - but will bite out of frustration or miserableness if you get the hook close to their mouth. The best luck I've had is with heavy fishing gear in really fast water - get the hook heavily weighted near the bottom and pay very close attention to it as it moves downstream with the current. If it stops moving for a split second, set the hook hard.

Be careful out there; treble hooks, snagging, foul hooking, bowfishing, netting are all illegal in the waters I mentioned, so I can only assume they might be in your area too. The NYSDEC Police routinely "go under" as fishermen to snag a few foulhookers.

Here in the Pacific, we usea a small florescent pink or orange ball (called a "corkie" I believe) above a single hook. I've seen flourescent yarn above a hook or spinner used as well. Those all work well here (supposedly these colors simulate the color of fish eggs). I have no idea if they'd work for atlantic salmon. Maybe some members from the UK will chime in. Salmon fishing with flies is quite an industry there.

Ok I tried fishing with "cookies" and with weighed fishing gear. I havent even had luck with spear fishing becaus they sit at the bottom and I cant even see the bottom. But i did catch a 36lb. Salmon swimming up a medium sized waterfall yesterday but only after waiting for 11 hours (from 6am. to 5pm.) If anyone else has any input it will really help -------------SEE FIRST POST--------------------
