Salsa 2?

I heard something recently about there being a second version of the Salsa in the works since the first is being discontinued and I was just wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on this and let me know how the new model will be different from the old one if you know.

Hi Max. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

The new Salsa (Salsa 2) is the same length, same thickness but is narrower. The first version was too wide for most.

Same blade shape but the Cobra hood is not going to be included on this model.

The handle will be 6061T6 aircraft grade aluminum. dark gray with a design on the handle.

Left / Right wire clip, tip up - Blade steel will be 440C - Nested compression lock - 14mm opening hole

Still a "little big knife" in its size proportions. A nice heavy duty, lightweight all purpose 2.5" blade folder that is not FRN. Ergonomic for most hands.

About 6 months out.

Sounds like a winner!!!
Sal, can you tell us what the locking mechanism will be?
thanks.

That's great to hear Sal. I was hoping it would be the same but slimmer. The Salsa is my favorite carry knife even if I thought it was a little too broad. Think there's any chance that we'll see a larger sized version of the Salsa in the future. I spend a lot of time in the woods on camp outs with the Boy Scout Troop I work with and a larger Salsa(say about 3.5 inch blade) could very very easily become my perfect outdoor knife. But maybe that's just wishful hoping.

I agree- I like the salsa but a little thinner would be good. Salsa is a good design but I didn't care for the cobra hood, glad it won't make an apperance on the II. It always caught on my jean pocket. Waiting patiently Sal, yeah right.

Sal,

I've taken a good look at the Manix but it's just too darn big for me. I don't have small hands but neither are they really large and even the Endura is a bit large for me. But I do believe that a knife made to be a "little big knife" like the Salsa put into a 4.5 inch closed size would function much like the Manix but would be easier for someone with more medium sized hands to control. Plus I prefer aluminum to G-10.

Have you held one?

At least for me that knife fits like a glove and is one of if not the nicest knife I've ever used. Solid, solid, solid.

Handled it many times at my local dealer. Just don't feel comfortable with that much extra size in my hands.

I think I'm gonna love this one. Too bad for the Cobra hood, it grew on me :(
BTW, if you're out of aluminium, you can use G-10 instead, I wouldn't mind. :footinmou

Sal,

Would you consider upgrading the blade steel of the Salsa II to VG-10? My current EDC is the discontinued aluminum Salsa. I love the ergonomics and the size of this knife, but my biggest gripe is the AUS-8 blade steel.

I've been carrying the Salsa for a few days, now. I can understand why some don't like it, but personally, I do like the hood.

My 'druthers would be a longer, more slender blade, say a 3" cutting edge 1/3 slimmer...Guess you can't please everybody all at once, but if you could, there would only be one Spyderco! :)

I just got my blue Salsa yesterday and I also like the Cobra Hood and the handle thickness. When say a thinner blade Sal do you mean the width of the blade from cutting edge to the top of the blade?

I REALLY like the old style of lock release than the newer one. I was lucky to try out both an older Cranberry Salsa next to a new black one and without a doubt I prefer the older style.

That's certainly what *I* meant. Thanks for putting it in such an understandable way.
