I just got a Salsa today, it's a great little knife, I just wonder if it's possible to remove the clip from it? any help please???? :)

Hi Oliver - Which version did you get? The Aluminum or the Ti? As far as I know, the clips are basically the same on either model - the major difference being the framelock vs. nested lock, I think. (I could be wrong, as I don't own the Ti model...)

Anyway, to remove the clip, you ALMOST have to take the knife apart, but not quite. Here's what you do:

1) Do this on a clean table space in case you drop any parts!

2) Remove the two torx screws on either side of the "barrel screw" holding the clip. (it may be possible to leave these in, but it will be hard to remove the spacer in the next few steps otherwise.)

3) Loosen the "barrel screw" on the clip side (that appears to secure the clip, but isn't the only thing) with a dime.

4) Once loose, take the screw out and remove the other screw from the opposite side of the knife. As you do this, the little round metal spacer that was between the two handle scales should fall out. This is what was holding the clip in place.

5) Now you can remove the clip.

6) Using a toothpick or tiny screw driver, position the spacer back where it belongs and carefully re-insert the bottom "barrel screw". Once you've got the bottom screw in place, hold it there with your finger and line up the other screw and then re-tighten with your dime.

I'm not sure why they made this such a pain -- it seems like the idea was improved with the wire clips on the Native III, Dodo, etc...

(Also, I was using an older Cranberry Aluminum Salsa for the experiement, so there may be differences if you have a newer model, but if you're having trouble, I assume it's for the same reason.)

Hope this helps, and enjoy your Salsa! It's a great knife in every other aspect except removing the clip!! ;)

HI! thanks for your great help! My Salsa is a blue one, very nice! This knife is great but the clip position could and should be improved I think. When wearing the knife in the left pocket of my pants the blade can open very easily and since it's a tip up carry imagine the consequences...
It could be an even better knife with a ambidextrous clip or a "meerkat" kind of clip :)

No problem! I completely agree on the Salsa clip. A MeerKat type of deep-pocket clip that was ambi would be ideal. The only tricky part with doing that type of a clip is that the "butt" of the MeerKat is symmetrical and kind of comes to a point (so there's a perfect "middle" spot to put the clip right on the edge. The end of the Salsa is more curved, and doesn't really have a center area for a clip to mount on the very edge, so I'm not sure quite where it would go. One possibility could be to make a clip that mounts like the one on the Native III(clamped on by the barrel screw), but instead of fastening onto the knife from the tip end toward the back, make the clip so that it fastens from the back of the knife forward (if that makes sense). This would allow you to center the clip on near the end of the Salsa using the barrel screw, but would also give you the extra "pocket depth" found on the MeerKat...

Personally, I would like to see all of Spyderco's "little big knives" have clips that position the knife very deep in the pocket like the MeerKat. With the bigger knives, it is understandable that you would want them to stick out of your pocket a little bit to compensate for the longer handles, but since the small models are much shorter, and are partially designed not to offend non-knife people, it seems like it would suit them to carry as deep in the pocket as possible.

If Sal reads this, I'd like to know what he thinks. It would be interesting to hear whether he thinks people tend to prefer the deep pocket carry or not. It seems like I've heard a lot of people praise the MeerKat for this reason...

200% agree with you!!! I removed the clip of my Salsa ad can now carry it deep in my left pocket without any risk! I love this knife! :D
