Just picked up a Salsa last weekend. Cute knife and I like the grip shape, grind, and steel. My questions are these:

1) I've noticed that the blade meets resistance on closing unless the compression lock lever is moved to the unlocked position. Since this didn't happen with my Gunting when I had it, is this normal for the Salsa?

2) There appears to be a flat spot or ding on the blade edge, which I've not yet used. Is this normal, or is it related to problem 1 above?

Any and all help appreciated!

If the resistance happens just before fully closing, then the resistance you feel is the detent engaging -- this keeps the blade closed in your pocket. Remember that the Gunting was the first compression lock knife, and Spyderco continues to refine its design. Salsa is compression lock knife #4.

The tolerances are very close, I noticed that if you snap/drop the blade closed with a lot of force, that sometimes the blade will touch the laynard bolt and turn the edge on the contact point. If you see any marks on the bolt then you know that this caused the problem. Once you straighten the edge, you can avoid recurrence by closing the knife gently. They may need to reduce the diameter of the bolt slightly in the next run.

Carlos:

Thanks for the advice. I figured there had to be a reasonable explanation...now to fix the bloody thing!

There are a few minor "glitches" as with any new knife. We are quite pleased with the knife on it's first run. The clip mount barrel will be reduced in size to avoid touching the blade in the future. The ti version was resharpened (all of them) and will be shipping as we speak. My apologies to the collectors for having to wait for it.
