As many of you know, Dave H on BFC does passarounds. He currently has both a Alum PE Salsa(green), and a Lum Chinese PE(green) in Canada. I'm number 8 of 10 for the Salsa, #11 is Dave H again.
I have the salsa right now(just picked it up) and 2 more ppl before me till I get the lum. We use them for 3 days, then pass it to the next one. I will be passing along on monday, and paying the $15 for next day to up north...
I just took a pile of pics(not the best, but they work) and will send them to Dave H to post. I'll post the link here.
Keep in mind while reading this, that I handled one of these instore already. Also, Eric "Normark" has made a neck sheath for it... he just passed it to me, so I'm the first to get to use it.
First impressions: SWEET. The rich green color is quite a welcome change from black or silver. The wire clip holds tight(hard getting into my pocket nevermind out). The cobrahood is an interesting attachment.
Lock:
woa. The compression lock, once you get to play with it, is sweet. There is no way I can see to have this sucker fail on yah, and it's still easy for me to close one handed. Just put last 3 fingers on bottom edge of clip, thumb in hole, and move lock over with index, close with thumb...
Lockup:
nice denent to hold it closed, though it's a pain on closing to have to overcome 2 locks. This one has about 1mm or so of vertical movement at tip, and nothing for side to side. It's enough to feel, but not see. I'd still say it's acceptable as this lock is being improved as time goes and can eaily be fixed in later models.
Handle:
like I said, the anodized green finish is a welcome change from black or silver. My only problem is my odd hands. The handle is either too short, or the thumb ramp is too high. I can get a comfortable hold with my thumb and push off my pinky, or get a good hold with all 4 fingers and have my thumb ride on top of the spine. The handle is thick enough (spine to belly) to be confortable enough, yet thin enough (side to side) to not be round.
Clip:
I like this wire clip a lot better than the one on my Q. It holds the knife tight both in pocket and in the necksheath.
Weight:
also a nice feature of this knife is the heft. It has a nice enough weight to let you know it's there, and the balance point is right behind the pivot(in open) to give a good balanced inhand feel.
Blade shape:
It seems like someone tried to shove the tip of a larger model back into the pivot. It's a bit stubby, but has a sweet belly for cutting.
Edge:
For an Aus8 blade, and }{, it's not too sharp at the moment, but I'll fix that. It won't shave hair right now. But it does slice paper cleanly.
The 'Pinch':
I had to see why ppl kept getting pinched by the lock. If you hold it so that the meat of your index finger is over the stop pin, you get pinched as you open. Just pick up the finger a bit and it doesn't pinch.
Overall:
This is a sweet @ss knife. Regardless of the handle being too short for an easy thumb AND finger hold(no pinky ramp on this one, like on the 'fly), I can see myself buying one. Though many find it to "fill" thier pockets, I don't find any problems with this.
Neck Sheath:
Eric 'Normark' does great work. It takes quite a pull to get out, but I'm the first one to play with it(unless he did some too) and it might loosen some with use. The sheath covers to the cobrahood, and curves down to land in the centre of the inward curve of the clip, then back to cover the lock. It locks in by pivoting the lock in first then snapping the blade in... but takes 2 hands to get out right now. I find that by placing my index finger in the hole and pulling, it comes out easier.
One question: excentric pivot? The all screw construction would make me tempted to take mine apart.
