Salsa Trick and Review Update
A while back I gave the Salsa kind of a "Blah" review on the forum somewhere. Well, I've been playing with it and it's growing on me.
I've learned a cool trick with this knife which is that if you use your index finger on the compression lock you can flick the knife open similar to the way some people flick axis-lock knives. Given the smaller size and odd geometry of the knife, I find this method of opening much easier and faster than using the hole. I always have to draw and then pull the knife deeper into my hand first before I use the hole, but the finger-on-the-compression-lock method makes it a pretty quick for me.
I can also close the knife very easily by compressing the lock with my index finger (while getting my other fingers out of the way) and flicking it closed. I've always liked Axis-lock knives for this "quick-close" reason and I'm pleased to see that this new Spyderco lock (whick I PREVIOUSLY didn't like) enables me to close the knife equally as fast.
It's a pretty slick trick! Flick open. Flick closed. Very convenient. The Compression lock is definately growing on me even if it's taken me several months.
I'm getting used to the wire clip, but it seems so long for such a little knife. I wish it were about two thirds the length because I use the tip of the clip for grip to draw the knife from my pocket and then I'm WAY chocked up on the knife and need to back off to open it.
I still don't like the Cobra Hood. It makes me have to SHOVE the knife two or three times to get it to seat down in my pocket nice. I've tried removing it, but I REALLY don't like the little hook on the spine that's left when removed. It's uncomfortable. So, I've left the hood and I'm trying to get used to it.
I'm starting to like the very-curved blade because it gives a lot of cutting surface on a short blade.
I've got a Lil' Temperance coming soon so I'll get to try out another Spyderco with the Compression Lock and see what I think. I intentionally bought the trailing-point one because I think I'd like the longer edge on it too. I'm looking forward to it.
