Well, I finally broke down and bought a Salsa yesterday. I was origionally hoping to get one of the nifty Ti versions but my damn gunstore had just sold the last one the night before!!! At any rate, even though I didn't get the Ti, I am very pleased that a have a Salsa and 40 spare bucks. The aluminum scales are a very deep shade of blue. The color is consistent and the finish feels kind of like the bead blast on a new Sebenza (mmmm... new Sebenza). I know that alot of people hate the pepper, but I think that it is kind of cute, kind of takes away that "dangerous" knife look. The blade is about 2 1/2 in of AUS-8 (including guard). Mine came Spyderco sharp. After breaking down some boxes and doing some whittling, the knife still has a very nice edge, not shaving, but sharp. The compression lock seems to hold the blade open pretty securely, but unfortunately, mine has a slight amount of verticle blade play as there seems to be on alot of compression lockers (like my Vesuvius and Lil Temperance). I am not concerned at all about this affecting the strength of the lock and it reminds me of the wiggle on a lock back. A new addition to this knife is the ball detent on the compression lock. This helps the knife to be held snugly shut without any worry of the thing opening en pocket! The cobra hood is a nice addition to the blade, although I see it as un-necessary. The hole on the Salsa is larger (a la Military) and in my opinion doesn't really warrant the hood. Still, it is pretty functional and a neat little gizmo. My only gripe about the Salsa is the clip and its placement. Whereas I really like the wire clips, I dont' like the one on the Salsa. It is positioned too far down on the handle, thus the handle sticks out too much out of the pocket. My clip also has a little bit of side to side wiggle. Still, it seems to anchor the knife pretty securely to my pocket.
Overall, the Salsa is a neat little knife that is legal in most places which is always a plus. I will probably go and buy the Ti version when it becomes more available over here in the midwest.
*** Forgot to mention that the handle is very comfy and hand friendly!
Thanks,
Matt
