I'm looking at making myself a forge and have recently heard some brief information on
salt forges. Can anyone help me with a few more detail regarding these machines

To my knowledge no one that I know of "forges" with salts. However heat treating with molten salts is a common practic.
Forging with salts IMHO would be a very dangerous and messy proposition. Every hammer blow would send molten salts (>1600F) spraying around and the build up of cooled salts on a anvil or press dies would be a big problem.

I've used salt pots to do heat treatments before (as an undergraduate about five years ago) and I do not recall much salt at all clings to the metal as it is withdrawn from the pot. Certainly not enough to form a thick skin as that would get in the way of doing a good water quench.

Steve, can you give us your reference? I think it is interesting idea.
