Salt Hardware? (Pivot Pin, Clip Nut, Clip)

Am thinking about getting a Pacific Salt, but thought I'd ask a question that I hadn't read about before.

Is the hardware on this knife made out of anything special to resist rusting? I'm thinking specifically about the pivot pin, the clip nut, and the clip.

Took my Native III on an offshore trip recently and noticed, the next day, a very small amount of oxidation around the pivot pin as well as some stiffness in closing. Am thinking about sending it back to Spyderco to have the pin replaced.

Wondering if I might run into the same issue with a Salt.

Sal should answer this one, but from what I understand all parts are corrosion resistant. This includes pin, bushings, clip... The only part I am uncertain about is the pocket clip. It looks like the regular spyderco one used on the E3. I could be wrong, I hope it's titanium because the coating is wearing off on mine. So far I have been in the Pacific about 5 times with my Salt 1. I love this knife. I wear it alot now. It goes with me swimming in the creek, in the ocean, and in the kitchen. You will be pleased - get this knife.

Dear Friends,

All metal parts on the Salt series are completely rustproof. Spyderco will not divulge how this is done, only that it is so.

I asked.

I believe Sal already answered this a while back. The entire knife is made of H1 steel as I recall. If the pins are not H1 they sure are as rust proof. I've rebuild several Salt models and have the pins from them and none of them rust in vinegar or salts or anything else. I've tried.

Can anyone provide a link to where I can get the Ti clips? I have the older steel clip and would like to upgrade. Thanks. :)

Ken, in that Spyderco forum thread that mr.vu just linked, TazKristi (who is an admin over on the Spyderco board) posted this:

The titanium clips are available through SFO. They aren't on the site, but if you call or email the store, they can help you out.

I really liked the picture of the stripped titanium clip in that thread. Let me go ahead and ask here.

Have any of you stripped the black paint off a titanium clip in this fashion?

Just wondering if paint stripper and a rag would do the job.

Ken,
If you haven't ordered one yet, PM with your address and I'll send you the one off my Tasman Salt. The stock Ti clip won't work on my Tasman anymore...

Noooo! Now i want a Tasman even more! And i must wait many months!

Ok, Salt is totally rustproof… what about other lineup - say, Military?
Liner is titanium ifaik - what pivot is made of?

IME, S30V (as used in the Milli, Dodo, Native and others), while being a great steel in it's own right, great edge retention and durability, fares less well at corrosion resistance in humid environments, I've had my Dodos get a faint patina of rust on the spine of the blade, and the backspacer, just by sitting unused in my storage box, *now* I store a packet of Silica Gel with each Dodo, haven't seen any further corrosion

the only other steel in my knife collection to rust just from sitting in our humid air has been my AUS-6 Jester and Ka-Bar USMC in 1095, just a faint patina of surface rust, easily Flitzed off or scrubbed off with 000 steel wool

in terms of corrosion resistance, here's how *my* collection fares, as always YMMV....

H-1, VG-10, and ATS-55; NO corrosion
AUS-6, S30V, 1095; SLIGHT cosmetic surface corrosion

STR did a great job on that knife. How much did that set you back?
