I'm paddling a fair bit in salt water.
I'm also occasionally going fishing - in salt water.
And every now and again, I go diving - in salt water.
You see the trend? Salty water... Normally not too good for the knife you bring along. Unless you're completely anal when it comes to taking care of that knife to make sure the salt water doesn't get to it.
That's the method I've been using so far, and it's driving the wife half-way from her wits.
So, I thought, why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone, and get me a new blade or two (:D ); the kind that doesn't rust and the wife will stay happy. :)
On my quest for this, I've bumped into the Spydie Salt family quite a few times.
And my thoughts are: Would that be it??

So tell me all you Spydie-Heads out there: Is the H1 steel actually, truly stainless even in salt water, and... does it keep an edge as my other only-farly-stainless steel does (ATS-34, VG10, 440C, S30V)??
Is my search over??

H1 has been proven, fully and completely, to be impossible (not kidding) to rust. Someone did some water test chambers. dont remeber who, but it lasted for quite some time. I would defintly reccomend picking up a couple, I have heard the steel is pretty decent as far as edge retention is concerned.

I am an avid diver as well as a sea kayaker and I can tell you that the Salt series works in the harsh saltwater environment. I have a Salt 1 SE clipped to my PFD and BC and was at one time doubtful as you are. I have had more diving and river knives die of rust than I care to count. I purposely did not rinse the Salts once this season and am happy to report that they are without a hint of rust. H1 takes a nice sharp edge almost effortlessly, and seems to hold it longer each time it is tuned up on the Sharpmaker. I liked them so much , I bought a Salt1 plain edge for land use.:D

Hi Karl, I have used the Salt I and Pacific Salt kayak fishing in the Sea of Cortez and they have been just as advertised. I can't wait for a fixed blade Salt to come out. :D

Safe paddling!

Cool guys, this is just the answer I was hoping for!! :D
Time for me to do some shopping! :D

Also very nice to see some fellow sea kayakers and divers out there!!!

I recommend serrated edge for H1. The serrated H1 knives will perform just as well as high end stainless. H1 is awesome stuff.
