I have a few questions about salt pots if anyone wouldn't mind chiming in. Lets see...

What is the difference between 316L and 304L and does anyone have suppliers of these that they could share?

Do you need SS pipe on the low temp pot or just the high temp pot?

Thanx for takin' the time to answer guys. I'm sure I will come up with more as I start makin' em.

The "L" means very low carbon, and these versions are usually used to minimize corrosion for welded products. 316 is like 304 with the addition of Mo for corrosion resistance. If you can find Kevin Cashen he would be able to answer the other questions.

I'll make it easier to find me since I have found you ;)

Your supplier for the 316L will be the CHEAPEST source you can find. As soon as you start pricing the stuff you will wonder if gold is one of the main alloying metals in it :( .

THe low temp are very tame, compared to high temp. You can go with thinner walls and I have succesfully used plain iron pipe for some time now.

These guys have Schedule 40 304 pipe. At 4" dia the wall is about .25" thick. But at about $70 and 11lbs per foot, I have to ask whether 304 is suitable for a salt pot?

I have a nice piece of stainless pipe John Andrews gave me but the wall is much thinner and I'm not sure which grade it is.

Anyone have an educated opinion whether either of these is suitable?

I was talking to an engineer at a metals yard in PA (can't remember the name of the place, sorry) and he said that when looking for any stainless pipe be sure to ask for PIPE and not tubling, as the tubing is much more expensive. He added that it was better, but not by much. When I told him what I wanted to do with it, he was very confident that it would work just fine. He even added that normal steel sched40 or 80 would work just as well and be much more cost-effective, so I guess that validates Kevin's use of it. For the price of one SS pipe, you could have several mild steel pipes ready to go.

Thanx for the info guys. I talked to one guy about prices locally for 316L and all I could do was cringe and say "owww... take it out , take it out" lol. Kevin aren't you a distributor of Heat Bath Salts? If you are I'll be needin' to get ahold of you in the near future. Thanx again guys.

You may want to look around a bit more, I am not a distributer that I am aware of, I wish I was since it would make getting them easier for me, but for now I have all the smame problems that you folks have, except that I am within 2 hours drive of their Detroit operation.

Lol... sorry about that Kevin... I read somewhere on some post that maybe you were. Anyway thanx for the help you give us new guys. I'll prolly be questionin' much more as I move along with the Baths.

Thanx,

Questions are fine. I guess I do have a distributership in opinionated answers ;)

Kevin,

Can you give some of us new guys a succinct breakdown of the costs involved with salt baths?

Looks like you can get the complete EvenHeat electric set-up from Tim Zowada, Danno. I talked to him recently, and he has carbon powder and all that seems to take care of the corrosive atmosphere the high-temp salts cause. Much tamer to use now, he claims. Looked like around $4k would do the whole setup. Expensive, but total control.
