I need some basic information on salt pots.

How do they work?
What kinda of "salt" is used?
How good is the temp control?
How much to build or buy one?
How expensive is the salt?
What are the advantages? Is it worth
the trouble? Any disadvantages?

I like the idea of very little scale, however, I usually draw back the spine with a torch and have to clean them up on the grinder anyway.

All info and comments are appreciated.

They basics are one high temp salt pot for heating the blade to MS1 and the low temp for quenching and tempering (marquench) the pots are usually built from pipe. Controls for heating and the burners purchased. The salts can be purchased from Brownell's.

If you can track down Robert Dockrell on the forums here, he uses a salt bath. You can see them at his web page.
