So, I read in an earlier thread that the Salt will be switched to screw construction - is that true? If so, can a pinned Salt be switched to screws? I'm thinking of putting up my waved Endura to trade for a Salt, but I'd like to have the screwed version, for future adjustments & cleaning if needed.

Also, what will the screws be made of? H1 as well? On the old models, how is the steel in the non-blade parts treated?

My son is bridging to Boy Scouts this year, and we're looking at a Troop that does a lot of outdoor activities, so I'm thinking of getting a Salt and putting it through it's paces for a year. (I don't have an Endura 3 or Delica 3, so the Salt would would be a good chance to check out the handle style.)

Yes going to screw construction. No they can't be changed. As to the steel parts other than the blade never been a clear answer but none have rusted. There are other steels that won't rust but would not be good as a blade steel.

To clarify a bit further. It's not just the Salt. All the "Salt Series" FRN folders as well as the Ladybugs and most likely the two Rescue models which share handles with the Atlantic and Saver Salts are being switched over from pins to screws.

I'm a bit disappointed with that. The Salts made great gifts for non-knife people who you really don't want seeing screws and going "Let's take it apart!"

I certainly don't dislike screws, but think on the Salt series rivets are better.

Hi Orca,

Hole sizes are different. I don't think you have the equipment to drill out H1. It's work hardened so the deeper you drill, the more your carbide bit will fry. Rycen and Paull re correct in their comments.

Hi Josh, I agree with you. One of our bg problems with screw construction is that non knife-makers take them apart and put them back together and then sell them as 'New In Box" which they're not. While there are some that are very good, few amateurs that can assemble a knife like the experienced knifemakers doing that job. Customers send them to us thinking that they have purchased a new knife and think that we have stripped the screws, etc. when building them.

But.................Many of our good customers (who are good at tinkering) have asked us to make them with screws.

Also on the Salt series, assembly is faster with screws (don't have to be so careful with riveting, just use calibrated dirivers) so we can increase capacity. It does cost more for parts.

Thanks for the info guys - much appreciated. I like the screws myself, as some of the stuff I've done with knives here eventually forces a more thorough cleaning. I've had an E4 that got really nasty, and fifteen minutes total disassembly & reassembly time had it working like new. They're my favorites.

As far as hole sizes, I just figured I'd drill out the pin and put in a same-size screw; I see now that that probably won't work. That's cool, I can make do with a pinned one if that's what comes my way. I haven't seen a Spyderco yet that I didn't like.

Paul,
Just curious: which version would you rather own -- and why?
Thanks.

When will the new, screw-constructed Salt series knives be available? I would definitely get one!

I've been told I had a screw loose more than once, but I haven't lost a rivet yet. ;) :D
