Salt series adopting D4/E4 chassis?

Just curious whether the Salt series would ever start using the D4/E4's disassembleable chassis.

I imagine that the screws would make for more points of rust, so I'd guess not.

But I was curious.

Heading out to Hawai'i in the next few months. The last time I was there I took a regular folder on the boat with me.

My goodness, after a few hours, the horror...the horror.

Thanks!

I asked the same to Sal, he said it's not planned. To much metal in the D4/E4

*nod*

I'd figured as much.

Ah, well, time to pick up a Salt now, I suppose!?

You don't have to bend my arm you know !

I asked a similar question on the Spyderco factory forum, and the response was similar, if not a little more negative. I can understand why liners are not an option, but a lot of people seemed opposed to updating the handle texture and switching to screw construction, and to top it off, no one really answered the question.

Reasons as I see them:

1. The monocoque handle suits the purpose better than the slab construction. The liners and screws are more bits that would have to be made in H1 and/or titanium.

2. Tooling new FRN monocoque handles in the same shape and texture as the D4 handle would cost around $50,000 per model, not including tooling the liners and clip, etc, in new metals. The Salts may not have the sales volume to justify this cost.

3. Keeping the E3/D3 handle retains in-production models for those who prefer that handle style.

The Salts are better without the liners because they are lighter. When I am boating or around the water, I often have light weight shorts on, I will only carry a light knife as a heavy one would cause the material to sag and would be more likely to drop out.

The linerless Salts are a nice option to go to when you need a lighter knife than the D-4. I have to say, the D-4 is a really nice knife. The Endura 4 is nice as well but it just doesn't seem like an Endura to me anymore. The Delica seems like a beefed up D-3 but the Endura seems like a compleatly different knife. That is not a bad thing because the Endura was never one of my favorites.
