salt vs assist vs rescue

In my opinion, I think any of them would make a good rescue knife!! I too am looking at those, to get and keep in my truck. And I am leaning towards the Pacific Salt & A D'Allara rescue 2.

I like the Atlantic Salt I have in Spyderedge. Of course I modified my knife a bit; as I can't leave anything alone. :D I thinned the profile so it would get into places better with less problems snagging or accessing tight areas and still left the tip blunted and yet pointed enough to actually stab through softer materials like cardboard boxes or clothing if necessary, but it would be a hard stab even still because it is still a true Wharncliff shape that I took it to over the sheepsfoot original profile. Then lastly I Waved it. I think it is a great rescue all around user.

If I were going to buy one I would probably go for the Spyderco C79 or C82. Both of those look pretty good too. I actually got my Atlantic Salt for free from a forum member that got carried away with a hammer and peened a bit too much. He was going to throw it out but I was offered the knife and took it rather than let him throw it away and basically just added an adjustable stainless pivot pin to it. Here you can see it next to an unWaved one that also got an adjustable pivot for the same reason. I sent this one back to him along with his Delica even though he originally gave me all three. The one I kept whips right out fast as can be imagined now.

Oh, and no the discolored area is not burn mark. It is reflection from the pocket clip lifting the knife up off the flat bed scanner. You can see I have one set for right hand and the other for left hand carry. That is all it is is the reflection from the light in the scanner.

I would definately go with the salt, although they are all very good knvies the Salt is really set apart from the rest by its inability to rust. BTW STR very impressive

Im leaning towards the new and improved Rescue 93mm blue handle but its either going to be that or the Salt

I REALLY liked the NEW blue handled Rescue myself. But, I have decided on the Salt!!

A yellow serrated Atlantic Salt would be my pick. Serrated H1 holds an edge about as well as serrated VG10 and I like the highly visible yellow color. If I wanted a plain edge I would go with a 93mm Rescue over a plain edged Salt because H1 dose not hold an edge as well as VG10 with a plain edge.

The Assist’s handles are very hand filling, comfortable and secure and the blade is equipped with a Cobra Hood (both features are nice if you have cold wet hands or are wearing gloves), but the Assist is a little more bulk than I like for pocket carry.

Thanks again for a very great job done STR.

My Atlantic and Delica are better than they ever were;)

I think I'd go with the Salt myself. To me anyway, unless you are a paramedic or something a "rescue" knife is not something you carry everyday. Rather a knife that sits in your car or garage or wherever for months on end until and emergecy comes up. Just sitting out in the open can be hard on a knife corrosion wise, especially if you live in a real humid part of the country. Although I don't havea Salt, everything I have heard about it tells me that it is pretty much corrosion proof.

That is my take on it anyway.

ginshun's post is why I think the Salt would be perfect for a vehicle rescue knife. I DO live in a humid enviroment. And all it would so is sit in my truck until it is needed.

I just don't get all of this paranoia concerning rust. I can't remember having problems with blade rust on any of my Spydercos in the past. Of course I don't store my knives in sea salt. :jerkit:

My input would be to steer clear of the Assist not because it's an inferior knife, but because it's uncomfortably thick. If you are an EMS tech and always wear scrubs or BDUs with the side pockets it may not present a problem but the thinner rescue 93 just carries better.

Why can't they make a rescue knife with a sharp point?

I wanted a knife with a glass break and sharp point, but all the knives with a glass breaker all had blunted ends.

I understand the point about in emergencies a blunt point is better so you don't cut the victim.

But the best rescue knife is the knife that you happen to have on hand.

And for a daily carry, my knife must have a sharp point. A blunt rescue knife would be useless because it would be either in my car or my house, as I would not be carrying it. And if I happen to need to use the knife while away from my car, then it's about as useful as a hospital that's 100 miles away.

Put a point on it. I reprofiled mine to points in about twenty minutes.

Ever since I got an Assist, it's been my regular carry. Of course, I generally wear cargo pants, and I have a couple of other knives on me, too. It hasn't even stained, although I've used it cutting weeds and gotten sweat and plant sap all over it.

Even a Sebenza makes a decent rescue knife. It doesn't rust easily, either, and I think I could break glass with the titanium handle. :D

If you want an excellent rescue knife with a point, get a MOD CQD Mark II. It has a glassbreaker tip and a great grip and strong pivot and lock. When I go out at night, I sometimes leave the Assist for the CQD or the CQD Mark II, depending on how compact a knife I want to carry.

IIRC the Assist has a retractable tungsten carbide glass breaker, which I would regard as very important for emergencies.

Carry whatever knife you prefer (or, even better, already have in your pocket) for EDC and have one of these on your keychain, next to the whistle and photon light:

would love to buy one, can't find one to buy.

Looked at my local ACE store - nada.

Went to my local Brookstone, nothing.

Microtech makes a knife with a point and a carbide tip for breaking glass.

I have one of the old style 93mm Blue Rescues and I love it for my work knife as a nurse. The Assist is nice but too heavy, wearing scrubs is like wearing pajamas, a heavy knife will drag down on your pocket. I have found that the 93mm Rescue is about the upper limit on weight I can carry in scrubs. The lack of a traditional point on the Rescue has not really bothered me as most times I use it to cut things.

H-1 Steel sounds great but I have never ran into a problem with stainless knives. Only knife I have encountered rust problems with is a Anza knife that I forgot was in my hunting pack. Even that was only a few spots as I was able to clean it up. I suppose if I worked around water H-1 would be a great choice.

I'm still wondering if my pacific salt is going to turn into a pumpkin at midnight. I live next to the ocean and a day on the water would always leave my other knives spotted with rust. The H1 takes a good edge, is easy to sharpen and you can't rust it. The perfect beachbums knife.
