Salt water/knife?

I live in Puerto Rico and go to the beach very often with family. I noticed a lot of stray dogs begging for food from people's picnic lunches. I'll be carry a ZT0556 or 0350 in trunks. How will these hold up to the saltwater? Just take apart and clean after use will be okay? TIA

A knife wouldn't be my first choice to defend off a dog, but it's better than bare hands.

A ZT would be rather heavy to have in your swim trunks. I think a neck knife would be better, maybe something from cold steel.

spyderco salt series would be my choice but as long as you clean them good each day they should be fine.

One of the Spyderco Salt series would be my choice. The ZT knives you mentioned are great knives, but might feel awkward in swim trunks. I'm not lazy, but it would get old having to detail strip my knife after every trip to the beach. A knife like the Spyderco Salt series you could just rinse off with tap water, dry, then squirt some lubricant in the pivot area and be done. And if you forgot about doing that, at least there would be no bad effects.

One of the best vacations I ever had was in Puerto Rico, beautiful country.

I have a spyderco salt series made of H1. I leave it in my board shorts. I don't oil it or rinse it. It occasionally gets rinsed when I rinse off at the beach. Never had a single sign of rust.

Any steel in saltwater is going to be a problem if not made for the environment. Do yourself a favor and get a Spyderco Pacific Salt with Spyderedge (full serrations).

Another vote on the Salt series-just rinse out the sand. I sometimes swim with a ZT in freshwater but not the ocean. Even my Randall Model 16 stainless Diver develops "freckles" in the ocean.

As far as rust resistantance there is none better than H1 steel. Get the salt don't think twice.

This! I own it and love it. It follows me to the beach and along for winter excursions. It's light with no liners and completely rust proof. I have the salt 1 and at some point will be buying the fixed version as well. You seriously need to look no further. Plus it's cheaper then the BM rust proof series!

I recommend a rolled up magazine or a stick for the dogs.

Exactly. A stabbed dog will ruin your vacation much more than some stolen food.
Just grab a local large stick.

And buy a h1 spyderco - great knives. :D

Agreed! Just feel more secure with a blade on me. Looking out for wife and young kids.
