Saltwater fillet knife options ?

This for a surf-fisherman who wears his fillet knife into the surf. Says he only buys cheapies because they all rust & corrode anyway. Anyone got any ideas ?
 
Get yourself a titanium blade!

Talonite/Stellit or Titanium would be the way to go here.

The problem with Titanium will be finding one in an appropriate format (unless a Mission MPK-Ti type knife would work)

With Talonite/Stellite, the key will be finding the material and then the knifemaker with time to make it.

RH - I have no Talonite blades but understand the stiff is REALLY corrosion resistent.

The issue of salt water fillet knives is one I've monkied with for years. There are some pretty corrosian resistent blades out there, usually AUS6 or 440A. The trade off is they don't hold an ege very well. I tied Dexter Russels and they're neat knives (I'm not sure about the steel - someone suggested it was 440C), but they also dull pretty fast. Half a dozen medium sized rock fish or one 30 LB Halibut would require edge touch up during the job. That's a mess I prefer to avoid!


I tried using Gerbers and Kershaws but they were so hard and brittle that they flaked off on the cutting edge. The final indignity was they are so hard that resharpening them was like starting a new career.


Talonite may provide the ultimate solution. In the meantime, I've gotten in touch with Phil Wilson, Seamount knives. He uses 154 CM which provides good corrosion resistence, and REALLY holds an edge with the way he does the heat treat. He has worked out a balance between retaining toughness (no flaking out on the cutting edge) and edge holding. Among saltwater fishers the reputation of his knives is very high.

The reported improved edge holding is like a holy grail for me. I'm sick of having to stop and sharpen knives in the middle of a pile of fish, or drag several knives along so I can grab another when an edge goes away! There is a waiting period for Wilson's knives but when it arrives I'll go out, carve up a pile of fish, and see how good they really are. I'm stoked!
