So I am heading out on my annual trip to the coast in a couple of weeks and this year I'd like to consider packing my RS along. I always end up needing a knife for various things like prying open oysters, cutting bait and other tackle needs, rooting around in different things, stuff like that. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with SR101 in a high salinity environment? Even though I will wash it off with tap water at the end of the day, the place we go, just the ocean breeze can rust a carbon Mora in about an hour. No joke.

So thoughts anyone? Or just take it and see what happens?

Not what I'd take with me. I used to do a lot of saltwater fishing in fl. And I know how what salt spray can do. Take something stainless or even better something like a spyderco salt to use on the water.

As an aside if yo do take it. Birchwood-Casey sheath fluid is the only thing I found that would keep my leatherman from rusting in salt spray. I wouldn't want to eat it though if you use your knife for food prep.

Pam cooking spray can be your best friend if you are planning on doing food prep with your RS. After you use it, wash the salt water off and then give it a spray with some Pam. This will help prevent rust and keep it food safe. Good luck on your trip and have a great time. That is a beautiful beach.

Hey, never thought about using Pam! And it's always around. Thanks!

Ti knives were made for salt water.. If you don't have at least ONE in your line-up.. you are slacking :)

the spyderco salt series will vastly outperform titanium unless you need something nonferromagnetic. I carried a Salt 1 for about 2 years and not even a hint of rust anywhere even though id keep it wet or leave fruit juice on it for days at a time, and took it in the ocean twice. It held an edge about like AUS-8 but it sharpened really easily. Mine was plain edge. Everybody seems to say the spyderedges stay sharp a lot longer

Saltwater + SR101 = RUST

Unless you keep it coated with something like mineral oil, PAM, or silicone if not using for food prep.

For salty environments I'd chose an MPK from Mission Knives. These are VERY tough and will stand up to just about anything you can dish out, including prying. For a folder, I'd opt for a Salt series by Spyderco. The H1 represents a real advance in corrosion protection but is not as heavy-duty as the MPK. Both are nice choices for being around the ocean. I would not take any of my Busse products on an extended stay in the salty waters if my life depended on it.
