I found this forum while trying to determine what knife to get to replace my standard issue pilot survival knife, so here it goes with my first post. First off, I'm curious about what the general impression is of the military's standard issue survival knife. Second, I'm considering Junglee's tactical drop clip jr. It's similar in size to the current issue knife (I'm size limited), has a teflon coated stainless steel blade (better rust resistance in a saltwater/coastal environment), but the only review I can find is from Jeff Randall. It gave the knife good marks, but I'd like more information if I can find it (already used the search function here). What do people think of this or any other knife (about $100)? Thanks for the help.

Junglee is rarely talked about here. I don't know why, but I think it has to do with the fact that they copy everything...I've said too much.

I too once had an interest in that very knife. Then I got over it because it has a saber grind instead of a hollow grind. If you want something with a better grind get the master hunter in 8A or carbon, or the Northwest ranger from SOG. But those still look like good knives. At least they use 8A instead of crapy 440A.

how about a fallkniven. I think the F1 is a good choice. You can also have it a number larger S1 (double convex) or a number smaller mod WM. As far as I know VG-10 is a good stainless steel. Their homepage is: www.fallkniven.com

Seahawk, I like the CS Master Hunter or the SOG Northwest Ranger suggestions. The Fallkniven looks good but I've not actually handled one. You might what to look at the Benchmade Nimravus also but it may be a little on the small side for your purpose. Another little bit of advice. The most rust resistant steels that are used it some diving knives like the 300 series don't really make very good blades because they are hard to sharpen and don't take a very good edge. Get one with a good blade steel and pick up a Sentry Marine cloth to wipe it down with initially and for maintainence.

There are a lot of good knives out there but my first recommendation would be to make sure you buy one that fits in your vest. And don't make the mistake of thinking that you can / will carry the knife in the lower leg pocket of your flight suit, if you do it will get in the way of everything and annoy you while you're walking, not to mention running.

My other recommendation would be to be sure and get one with a quality kydex sheath (or have on made for the knife you select). Most nylon sheaths are pieces of crap. Eagle / Blackhawk sheaths are pretty good but take up an amazing amount of your already limited space in your vest.

Also, I agree with the previous posts in that stainless steel isn't really a requirement, but may be better depending on how much you like or are willing to maintain your equipment.

For some reason they don't get mentioned much here but the Randall Model 15 is a good knife and it will fit in your vest. It is available in stainless or tool steel. I would skip the saw teeth. You may be able to get one with little or no wait from Nordic Knives in CA or possibly from Randall (they have a web site) price will be the same either way.

Anyway, there are a lot of good choices out there. Just be sure it fits in your vest or you want have it if (hopefully not) and when you need it.

Steve6 - Thanks for the imput. One of the reasons I was looking at the Junglee is that it is very close in size to the issue knife, so it shouldn't present a problem in fitting into the vest. There isn't much extra room, otherwise I would get a Fallkniven A1 (which I will probably get anyway). The reason I was looking for a stainless steel blade is that if I go down, I will be going for a swim. I plan on using marine tuff cloth on whatever I get, but since I may not be able to keep the knife dry I'd like a little more protection.

Anyway, thanks to all who replied.

Seahawk, I have to agree that the Randall 15 would be a great choice but you said you were looking at around $100 and the 15 in stainless will run you about $250 from Randall. I've got a Blackjack Halo which is a Model 15 clone that comes with a great Eagle industries jump sheath that I'd let you have for $150. I don't think it will fit your vest in the Eagle sheath and if you want just the knife so you can get a smaller Kydex sheath made I'll let you have it for $125. Let me know if you are interested.

Any search for a saltwater fixed blade should include the boye BDS-4. This knife is made from Boye's dendritic cobalt and is absolutely rust proof. Take care.

You might want to check out Mission Knives MPS-Ti or MPS steel. Both versions are priced higher (Ti of course a lothigher) then your $100 range - The blade of the MPS is a smaller version of the MPK with sim blade belly. The MPS is set up as a replacement for existing US govt survival knife and is designed to fit the existing pilot survival knifes sheath. Mission does provide a slick kydex sheath with the MPS. You can check out the specs on the MPS at missionknives.com I also carry the MPS here at NCET when I can get them.

Just as a point of interest, you might want to check out Ocean Masters dive knives.
They are made from a Beta alloy titanium and cost less than a C' note.
