I picked up this 0801 super cheap on the exchange last week. The seller was very honest about it's condition (btw egally08 is top notch), but the condition of the edge didnt hit home until I inspected the knife in person. The previous owner, before egally08, had sharpened the knife in such a manner that it created about a .030" divot into each side of the edge about an inch from the pivot. As if it had been sharpend with a work sharp, but had been left stationary with the belt running, before pulling the blade through. There was also some half hearted anodization of light green and purple on the scales.
My first thought was to send it to ZT for the 30.00 blade replacement, but I decided that since the blade was still salvagable, I would get to work. I laid it to the DMT coarse stone and took around .070" off the edge vertically, until the divots in the sides were almost gone, and the edge was smooth and flat again. I then double dipped it in PCB etchant for 1 hour per dip. While I had the knife apart, I scotchbrited the fool out of the scales, and gave them a soft, broken edge apperance. I stone washed the blade at the shop today, for 5 min's in tri-tip ceramic medium, and then reassembled. Upon arriving home, I tossed it on the wicked edge.
Here is the result: (you can still see where the deep gouge was in the blade, that the wicked edge didnt clean up)
