I use the studs from Tandy 1309-01 Brass, 1309-20 Nick over Brass, and 1309-17 Black. These are all the rivet style, I prefer them over the screw back. I use these a lot, in fact I rarely use a snap any more unless it's by specific request.

I generally buy about 120 or more at a time. When I started using them they were plus or minus about .50 each, and the price just keeps on rising. The last time I bought a quantity they came in at just under $1.00. Now, these are off shore produced (China) and generally the more you buy the cheaper they get per unit, however Tandy's pricing seems to reflect just the opposite.

The Brass and Nickel at my Tandy price are now $1.80 and the Black is $2.00 each with no further discount for quantity.

Okay, that's the back story. Now if any of you have stumbled on to a source for the same type (rivet back) and quality, I would be grateful if you would share your information, keeping in mind that anything over the $.50 is price gouging somewhere in the food chain.

If I can't find a reliable source priced reasonably, I'll do what I did with the pocket clips and have them made myself and become the distributor.

Paul I was in the market for these the other day. I almost pulled the trigger on a few in each finish (black, nickel and brass) but $2 a pop was a bit much.

I ended up buying 5 (each) from ebay. Unfortunately they are the screw back, but they don't look like other screw backs, these look just like the Tandy SB studs. I think they were about $1 each with free shipping, but better, they are manufactured right here in California. I wanted the rivet style, but don't have a strong aversion to the screw back with a drop of loc tite, especially given the country of origin and proper looks.

If you're interested, I can take a pic so you can see what they look like, otherwise I'm looking forward to seeing what others come up with.

Edit- I went ahead and took a pic because I hadn't screwed one together yet I got to wondering.

This is one of the black oxide studs. It screws down to less than a dimes width and is smooth.

They ARE black oxide over brass so they aren't perfect and shiny. I meant to take the pic with something recognizable in the frame so you could gauge the size, but they are fairly large. I'll need to cover the back with a lining, but I'd have had to do that regardless of fastening style.

Also, if you'd like I can mail you a couple so you can see them up close.

Edit- in the interest of being thorough.

Always remember to stick a drop of Loctite or super glue in there when you use those buddy. I've used both types and have noticed the screwback taking over too Paul. Don't have a source for the rivet ones.

Button studs are outrageously priced. I would just have them made if I was going to use them regularly like you do.

Thank you for the additional photos and information, Anthony. The reason I like the rivet back is when they are fully set the back washer compresses to below leather surface, even though I still line everything. When I am forced to use screw back, I gouge out a circular depression to fit the screw head so I still get level surface finish. I have just grown to prefer the rivet back.

Man, if they are that expensive, I might just have to alibaba them. I hope it won't have to come to that. :-/

Why not? They are probably made in China anyway. If they are made in Taiwan that's a different story. Guess it all depends.

I'm sure we'd all prefer them made here. Obviously they can be made here and sold at half the price of the Tandy items. Honestly, I'm sold on the screw backs. May not be exactly as I wanted, but I don't really care at this point.

Strig, if you have any direct contact information on the source where you got them, Invoice, packaging, etc., please email me. I tried to contact them through eBay and that is an exercise in futility. eBay wants to stay between me and the source and that's okay, I don't mind eBay getting their cut, but I also would like to get through to the company so I can determine if they offer large quantity pricing and even have what I want available.

I have exactly what you need Paul. Give me a few minutes to find it.

Emailed.

If it's okay with Dwayne, I'll post the link. I think it's okay with the rules because it's a product unavailable by a supporting member? I want to help, but don't want to get dinged. :)

I like to support China as little as possible, for several reasons. If you can get Taiwan made ones at a reasonable price, that'd be great.

Your good to go. :) As long as its not a live eBay auction, deal spotting knives, or showing prices here.

Well, I checked out Strigamort's source and got a couple of samples sent to me. They appear to be the exact same as I have been buying except they offer only screw back, and the other difference is they are half price to the Tandy prices at my pricing level. I placed an order for for 130 sets in nickel and black in two styles and I'm going to give then a try. I think they will wind up working just fine….plus I believe they are USA!!!

That's great news Paul. I'm really pleased to hear that the quality matches your needs, after all, if they work for you, they'll certainly work for me. They are made not far from me here in California. :)

thanks fo the link. been purchasing them from tandy. china shouldn't cost that much.
