Sambar stag shortage?

I recently tried to order two stag handled knives and was told that sambar stag was in short supply due to political unrest in India. So I put the knives on backorder in hopes that I will get them soon. Has anyone else had trouble buying stag knives?

One of the knives I tried to order was a vintage stag Russlock. I'm not sure how that thumb latch will feel in my pocket but I'm going to give it a try anyway. If anyone has a Russlock I would be interested in hearing your reviews and comments.

I don't know about the shortage in general, but I do know that Buck knives ran out. I recently purchase a Buck signature custom knife, and found out that the production run of 500 was stopped at around 277 due to their shortage.

With so many contrived shortages over the past dozen years or so (oil as an example)
you have to wonder if this isn't another one of them. I know that for quite a while the environmental zealots has been trying to ban all types of Horn, Ivory, Bone, ETC world wide. If only they could understand the meaning of the word fossil,it would help. I guess you can't expect much from a bunch that runs on pure emotions. They don't have to use any brain power and most of the time it's evident they don't.

Nobody should complain about using sambar stag from India. These animals are kept on farm preserves and the antlers are picked up as shed. No one gets hurt.

We may have to switch to snipe horn handles soon.

How do you collect snipe horns? And who gets to hold the bag?

There has been a ban on Sambar for almost 2 years now and it is starting to show in the availability of this material.

Lifter: While it is true that the Sambar are raised on preserves and initially the horn came from sheds the inevitable occured. As soon as there was a profit to be made the poaching and slaugher of the animals for the horn only began. Just like with elephant ivory many years ago the animals were being killed for the horn only and the Indian government put a ban on the sale of Sambar stag. The ban has not been lifted and there is no discussion as to when or if it will be. If you like Sambar get it soon as it may be a handle material of the past very soon.

Don't know about a ban or shortage of Sambar stag..., but A.G. Russell has the D.H. Russell Fish and Bird (or Fish and Game, or whatever their smallest knife is called) in both rosewood and stag. The rosewood is $54.95.., the stag is $135.95. $80 difference, just for the stag handles!!!

Mark, That wasn't Sambar that was Sandbar Stag.

Kirk: Check my address just above yours on this thread. Where be Ye? Email off line and perhaps we can get together for lunch or something.

Snipe Horn......
Hold the Bag.....

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAahahahahahahahahaah

I've lead a couple of snipe hunts in my time. That's horrible about Sambar, I'm just getting ready to pick my first Bowie, and that would make a great handle. Guess I'll have to give up on that and work on PhilL to try to get h him to give up that Stag-ley....

Cal,

I'll admit to having a penchant for Case stag handled knives (I have a modest collection of them) and, yes, I do have a stag Russlock. Quirky but interesting knife. It's the first Case locking liner I know about and it works just fine. Take care.

The good news of the shortage may be that the value of sambar stag knives that I already own may go up in value.....anyone had this experience yet in selling knives from a personal collection?

When the price of sambar stag gets close to ivory you will see it slide off into history as handles for knives. When the factory knife
companies go to something else, and they will for purely economic reasons, the bottom will drop out of sambar stage prices. It won't take long for the government of India to realize that they lost a big source of tax revenue. Money drives governments, all of them, no exception. I doubt it will take long for the ban the horn crowd to get told to kiss a fat hen's butt and things will go back to business as usual. Not to worry, time will correct it all.
