How long will this embargo go on. I keep waiting for news that it's lifted but it goes on and on. Anybody know where there is any? I'm losing my patients with India. If I see any of those made in China knives with Sambar I'll know it's a conspiracy.

Personally, I would say, either cash in those CD's, and pay astronomic prices for Sambar, or go with another material, like Red Stag.

I was looking at some old blade magazines the other day and there was an article about a stag embargo, it was about 11 years ago. It said the embargo was in affect because porchers were starting forest fires so they could find the fallen antlers easily in the tall grasses. In my opinion it's like when sugar went up, the price of donuts topped $4.00 a doz, when the sugar prices dropped to there normal prices, donuts are still over $4.00 a doz. So like Mike says either pay $$$$ or go with another material:(

I just bought some european red stag and it's not bad, but I'd prefer sambar too. It seems that there is none left in Denmark now, so we'll just have to use the local stuff. Red stag can be had in many qualities, and the scales I got look like sambar alot but it's thinner.

If you didn't have the cash or foresight to stockpile sambar you might take a serious look at red deer. It is not as thick but for most knives is quite adequate when properly treated withpotassium permanganate the resuts are very nice because the antler is bright white.

I have a few on my site and especially helpful is a side by side photo of two knives in sambar and red stag for comparison.

What was the reasoning behind the embargo in the first place? It seems to me they could use the revenue the sales would bring. Are people killing the deer for the antlers or are they sheds? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Hey guys why not try some of that beautiful bone that knifemaker Bruce Evans has for sale at Alpha Knife Supply.? That's in Chuck Bybee's www.titanium-man.com I have used a lot of bone I did myself at one time. The product that Bruce is making is far superior in looks to the giraffe bone stuff I have seen in pictures. If somone is interested in doing their own I can give them a start. However I could only get a limited number of colors to wor well. Frank

Note that there are also sambar deers in New Zealand and Australia. It should be possible to import some stag from there...

To confirm what Darrel just posted, I stopped by there (Texas Knifemaker's Supply) today and they are taking a BUNCH to the Blade Show next weekend. Jim Lemcke stated that this was some they were able to just come across but has absolutely no idea where he may find any more. While I was there, they matched up 110 pairs of scales. A simple word to the wise...if you want any sambar stag at all, I would try to get some at or before the Blade Show. It will be slim pickins, if any, afterwards. You can take that to the bank.

On another note, you guys should see the cape buffalo crown scales they have! They are awesome. Imagine water buffalo scales with bark. That's the best description that I can come up with.

Rene is right the bottom line is it caused problems
with the wild life ( lions ) and it's worth is more
than the sales from stag there. I don't see it lifting
any time at all.
I just got 20 pounds of Red deer antler in today
and see the deer that dropped them, looking good.

DAN, i belive that india is trying to preserve the habitat for the tigers and turn it into a tourism cash cow. i know us knife people might not like it. but it is a much better use of their resources. there just isnt a lot of room for these great creatures any more.

Absolutely right and as it should be, like it or not.

Capitalism helping saving the environment - you can't argue against that.

I'm willing to go over there and pick up as much of the stag as I can ship home with me, and I won't even think about hurting them pussy cats, and won't even charge them for picking up all that discarded antler, making such a mess of the place, I'm just thinking about the tourist! And I'm such a nice guy I won't even charge them for the service.:D :D :D

I'm with Rene on this one :D I also picked up some Samabar from Jim yesterday. It's pretty bad when you come home, pick up that *special* blade you've been working on, and decide it's Mammoth quality, but not quite Sambar quality...
