Those are inexpensive enough at HF, but it's even less to use the big horse sponges from Tractor Supply. They are about the same in use but you can cut them to whatever size you like. I like the piece to be as wide as the project, then I keep a scrap to buff off the residue. They work really well for that job too.Dye is a fickle beast. How did you apply? I don't dye much anymore but when I do I've gone to using a disposable foam paint brush. This gives me the most even coverage of anything I've tried. Looking close at your pics its possible that the unevenness is in the leather. Specificly that diagonal streak. That may not be your dye job just the material. Hard to say for sure.
