hey folks.. after reading/seeing several threads and pics on these Sami style sewing kits, i just couldn't stop thinking about them and just had to try making one for myself.. i am please with how it turned out.. much better than i anticipated..

(many thanks to Stick65, Skog and wayland for the inspiration )

there is also a really cool shot of one of these in the Ray Mears Bushcraft, Sweden episode...

this was all primarily done by hand, i will admit to using a little bit of electric tools on some parts that were frustrating me...

it is made from a piece of deer antler that i shaped, hollowed out, sanded and then soaked in linseed oil, to give it antiqued/aged look..
i carved the lines by using an awl and a small triangular file.. i then filled the lines with a mixture of pine pitch, bees wax and crushed up oak coals from our wood stove..

here's some pics.. let me know what you think..

cheers.. Mike

Man that is slick Mike, nice work! Cool wedding band too, is it damascus?

thanks T.. it was a lot of fun to make... and yes the ring is made from damascus and platinum in the inside.. only fitting that a knife junkie has a damascus wedding ring., dont you think. :)

Mike, that is really cool! I wish I had the patience to make things like this.

"Awesome" gets thrown around a lot, but this one really is, and uniquely cool to boot!

Mike this is off the scale awesome! Say how or what did you do to create the bump or rise in the leather in order to park the needles? Thanks!

Very cool Mike, great job buddy !

I bet you could make a small PSK using the same idea eh !

hey Quirt.. how goes it.. the bump in the leather was made by simply folding the leather in half, and the pushing the neddles through..i then wrapped the thread around the needles...

many thanks Pit.. i have already thought of making a few more in different sizes for a PSK/fishing set up..:D
