On the way home from work today I stopped in at Sam's to see what kind of supplies applicable to knifemaking I could find. To make it easier I've broken what I found into categories:
(1) The Beer category: Well that pretty much covers that category! Vast qauntities! Not much of a knife quench but I believe knifemakers often quench in it. Good prices by the case! (For those teetotalers among us they also have soft drinks. Oh, and bottled water for those of us who live in the "let's get the life baked out of us by the sun" parts of the country!)
(2) Comestibles: Pretzels, chips and candy galore! Hide them in your shop for when your wife announces you're having veggies and rice for dinner or casserole surprise. (Note: Don't hide the chocolate near the forge!)
(3) The Air-conditioner category: Lots of window units. (See "let's get the life baked out of us by the sun" part's of the country referenced above.) They also have any number of fans including one about five feet across that not only would cool you down but would clean out the shop too!
(4) First Aid: You can buy band-aids in bulk! And huge bottles of Tylenol and Advil, a must have! (Sorry, they don't carry self stitching kits however!
)
(5) Tools: Lotsa portable hand tools and if you are into cheap import steel, a huge bench vise painted a lovely fire engine red.
(6) Safety: Fire extinguishers and smoke alarms. Let's face it guy's I know I'm not the first person around here to set myself on fire!
Side note: good buys on three packs of leather gloves.
(7) Entertainment: Boomboxes and CD's for those of you who just have to listen to Jethro Tull while you make knives (in my case it's the Best of the Kodo Drummers of Japan or The Chieftans). If you listen to Barry Manilow however you probably need to find a new hobby!
On a serious note there are some things of practical use there, I found five gallon containers of 20 wt. hydraulic fluid which says it's Grade 1 mineral oil. That's a bunch of quenchant for abiut $14.00. They also have olive oil in 5 quart container, that's a bit more pricey however.
