A while back I asked Yangdu to consider a run of the Samsher...and here is the first batch. Must say I am quite excited to see the results!

A few notes:

The two Samsher are very similar, but have a couple subtle differences. IMHO, model #1 comes the closest. (For comparison's sake, I'll show the model against #2)

The most notable difference to me is (and look at the red lines) the "length of the blade before the recurve". The model is a bit longer than either of the blades above, but #1 comes closest. (see red arrows)

Both are on-spec in terms of weight and length.

Both models have the shorter, non-habaki-style bolster.

#1 has the larger karda/chakma - as requested

#1 has better cho placement.

Both have a little drop to the handle...but personally, I would prefer a little more. (see red lines on the handles)

I would also like to see a little more "point" in the tip.

The construction on both appears to be excellent.

Looks like a great start! Just need to refine a few minor details...and we'll be ready to go.

Email sent on #1 Waiting......Done deal

YES!
Recieved my JKM also, shelf space and bank account being reduced.

Beautiful knives but too heavy for me. If any come in light, say 28 or below I'd be interested.
That's what I thought, but the only large/heavy Khuk I have is the carved YCS and it's to pretty to even try and use, with the wood handle I can slim it down to make a little more managable, I'll just wait and see.
Dan thanks for the idea/

whoever gets these definitely owes us a comparative review. :p

Dan, when the #1 gets here I'll do what I can, like I said before the only Large Khuk I have is a carved YCS and It stays on display. I do have some 12" Balance and PK's, I'll do what I can.
I could ship it to Someone, if they would like to do a full review, anyone want to volunteer?

As many khuks as I have bent or broken I'd never do a field test on someone elses:rolleyes:

Yep, that's the old target that Bura followed on his, 18" and 30 oz. I have an 18.5" 29 oz. from him that is nice but with the habaki for some reason. Nice blades!

Who better to evaluate and judge the performance of a new design? These knives have a guarantee and rightfully should be tested by an experienced person with Khuk knowledge of how they are expected to work.
I would be proud to ship this to you, and with a paid return slip if you would be interested. If the knife can't be warranted, I'll use it as a paper wieght.
Please think about it.

Hey, that would work! But if you sent it to me I might use it pretty hard and wear it down, so when you got it back it might look like a 9" 6 oz. Bilton, and I might have to include a different scabbard with it. :D

Seriously Dick if you do send it you should do the "acceptance test" on it first though to make sure there were no heat treat problems. Just do a bit of hard chopping and make sure you get the side of the blade as well. Hollow or someone else could really wring it out from there.

Norm

So, was this the DOTD or is there something else coming? Wouldn't want to walk away too early.

Norm, if I send it to you and it comes back a 9" I want an autograph also.:p
I can do the acceptance test, and then send it to anyone that would give it a good test and SEND IT BACK!
Who would like the task?

Dick
