Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. Anyone?

I just ordered one of these today, a touch-screen MP3 player based on the Android operating system. Actually, it seems to be much more than just a handheld media player - with apps and games, GPS, camera, Wi-Fi, and even FM radio, it's more like a PDA that happens to play music.

Anyone have one and like it? If so, recommend some applications or accessories?

Be sure to run anti-virus/anti-malware on your new gadget. Check Cnet downloads for versions that match the android operating system.

I have the older P2 which allowed me to use bluetooth to connect to my cell phone. It's nifty feature.
I'll bet its easier to load music and videos compared to the ipod touch, and sound quality is as good or better than the touch. The radio is a nice feature too!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

You touched on one factor that influenced my shopping decision: The Galaxy Player can swap files with a PC via a USB cable or by SD card. No special software required - it's seen as an external drive. The iPod requires special software to be installed on the computer to interact with the Touch.

Not sure how the sound quality will compare through the headphones or car stereo, but when played with the unit's built-in speaker the Galaxy Player has two speakers; the iPod Touch only has one. The iPod Touch doesn't have FM either.

It should be here next week and I'll leave comments after I get a chance to use it.

I played with the Galaxy player and was very impressed! There are tons of apps available in the Android marketplace, just be wary because they aren't as screened as carefully as Apple's. I'm not sure if the new firmware on the player has an app killer; if not, that would be one of the first apps I'd download, so there aren't zillions of apps running in the background.

Also, I'm not sure about Android, but to browse the forums more easily, i use Tapatalk. Works pretty well. Oh and the paypal app to buy all those knives :D

What you've purchased is basically a small tablet, or a large Android phone without the phone. The obvious disadvantages over a larger tablet like Kindle Fire or a Tab 7.7 is that the smaller screen makes reading EBooks less enjoyable, and watching videos or playing isn't as cool either. The obvious advantage is that since it's smaller, it's far easier to take with you.

IMO, the Galaxy Player (and the iPod Touch) fills a very specific niche. It's a great device, to be sure, but OTOH, most of the features are redundant if you already have a smart phone. The 8gb 5.0 costs around $200 from amazon. If you're due for a new phone contract, you could instead get a 16gb Galaxy S3 for $150. The screen is a fraction smaller, but the phone is much thinner, has a much faster processor, better cameras, more recent operating system version, and of course, it's also a phone (with 4G connectivity). If you already have a smartphone, or plan to get one, I honestly can't understand why one would also want/need another media player like the Galaxy 5.0. It's basically a phoneless smartphone. Apart from having a built-in FM radio, there's nothing it can do that most smartphones can't (and there's streaming radio apps available anyway). If it's only to browse the web at home on WiFi, or to take with you in a bag on plane/car trips, you might as well have a 7" (or even bigger) tablet. If it's something you want to throw in your pocket, then you might as well just have a smart phone like the S3. About the only advantage, IMO, that the Player 5.0 has over just using a smartphone is the battery. It has a larger capacity battery than almost every smartphone, and obviously doesn't suffer from standby drain. Of course, most smartphones have replaceable batteries so you can keep a spare handy, and if battery life is really an issue, you can always buy an external charger/battery pack.

I guess the biggest reason someone might like the Player 5.0 (or iPod Touch - but that's a vastly overpriced hunk of incompatible junk IMO) is if you only have a basic cell phone, with a basic plan, and don't want or need the features of having a smart phone, with the added costs. A basic "dumb" phone with a minimal plan can be had for pretty cheap these days, especially if you go prepaid/pay-as-you-go, if all you need it for is the occasional call, text, and to have for emergencies. A smartphone plan with data can run you upwards of $90-100 a month, or even more. The price of the Player 5.0 might be the same (or even more) as the latest smartphone when purchased on contract. But the price difference between the monthly plans of a regular phone and a smart phone can pay for the Player in just a few months.

But if you are already a smartphone owner, I really don't see the point in getting the Player 5.0. Unless maybe it's for your kid or something.

'Morning Planterz.
No, I don't use a smartphone. You're correct though, the Galaxy Player has all of the same features as a smartphone, except the monthly bill.

I don't mind paying money occasionally for a 'toy', but darnit I hate paying bills.
