So I've been looking for a fairly intense shorter hike that won't take up the entire day. I read about this hike in a few places online and it sounded pretty rough, but everyone knows that people exaggerate online...right? It's located just past Santa Ysabel on the way to Julian. I read somewhere that it's 1 to 6 miles out and back (0.5 miles to first fall where most people turn back). It also noted that it might be a good idea to bring some cord or rope in case you need to lower your pack down some of the steeper areas. I guess I just can't take a clue. Anyway, it was a beautiful day and worth of a few pics.

All downhill from here.

Not much water running, but enough to make some serene pools. I kicked back and ate lunch around this one.

Amazing how life can make an appearance in such unusual locations.

See all those rocks? Yea, that was the hike! And not a flat surface in sight! It was a blast, but my body is getting a bit old for scrambling around like that.

This is a great hike for the fit, and something for me to work up to...which I plan to do. I'm going to tackle it again in a month so I can judge my progress.

As many of you will recall Big Chris submitted a neck knife in the W&SS Neck Knife Challenge. That knife cut everything it came across like butter and felt good in the hand too. However, fit and finish was far down the list...particularly when compared against some of the "heavy hitters". Because I love sharp, I asked Chris to hook me up with a belt knife version. Stats are: OAL 8.5", 1/8" thick, S90V. So far I've used it on meat and rope, and found it very willing to do it's job. In my opinion fit and finish on this knife would have had Chris firmly in mid-pack (in that category) in the neck knife challenge. I'm very please with both knife and sheath.

And for sh*ts and giggles, here's my new Maxpedition Falcon II. Like a genius, I picked this hike to unnecessarily upsize my pack. Actually, this seems like a very versatile and comfortable pack, I'm just not accustomed to day hiking with something this size.

Good looking design for a knife. I'd definitely want warning so I could swap feet if I was going to hop about over that or I'd be switching to the swimming feet for better traction, and that isn't ideal.

Nice hike.It reminds me of one some buds & I did in Japan back in 87.
A lot of rock hopping' will sure take it out of you alright.

Thanks for the pics.

nice pics sir. I love a mid week hike that doesn't take all day. get out in the woods, relax a bit, enjoy the quiet, and great scenery. just what the doctor called for to help with a stressful week

Upon waking up this morning my left knee and hips are really feeling it. Maybe next time I'll leave a walker a bucket of Advil waiting for me at the trailhead. At least none of the ticks snuck in and took hold. Picked off 9 of the little buggers throughout the hike.

That's the difference between hiking and rock hopping.
Glad to see you picked up a manly pack :D and you're taking advantage of this great weather.

Some really nice shots there, looks like an awesome area to explore. It reminds me I've been stuck at home far too long. I like the knife too, looks like it would be comfortable and capable.

that's a nice spot! i really like scrambling over rocks and tech terrain too - i find the harder the terrain the less likely i'll encounter garbage to haul out - it's always a bit of a downer no matter how small. i like that knife design too - i like the downward sloping handle near the pommel. it's usually where i find a hot spot when the handle is just straight.

I used to love the rocks. Like JV3 said, it's cleaner up there. I never came across anyone else when I was on rough ground. Peace and quiet! :D

That knife is a classic. A semi-skinner makes a good utility knife.
